Would this swap be worth it? I am currently running a TR224 cam with Comp 918 Springs, and hardened pushrods. I like the idle sound, but my friend has a G5x3 cam, and it sounds so much better. I would really love to have that street pounding sound. I am currently considering either of the following:
-keeping my TR224 cam setup, and adding some 5.3 heads from Patriot, or someone else. or....
-getting a G5x3 cam, and just calling it a day, or...
-getting a G5x3 and adding some 5.3 heads
I am looking for 400+ rwhp. I would be getting a tune done through a guy here in Pa, when he's available. I know that with a tune, that my current setup would get me close, and a set of heads with a tune would put me over that. Im just wondering what would be the best route to go.
Also, would it be possible to still use my Comp 918 springs with the G5x3 cam? And, would the springs I got on a set of 5.3 heads be good for the G5x3 cam?
Basically, I really want a more agressive sound, but if Im not going to see any kind of significant gains with the G5x3 over my TR224 its probably not worth all that money just for the sound, right? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Go in with LS1 edit and lower it from 850 down to 600 rpm. Or try adjusting the throttle body screw if you don't have LS1 edit.
For more shock effect you might need a more open exhuast; that will make it lope harder as well as louder.
I would say try that stuff, and if you still aren't satisfied, pick up about any 230 range cam on a 112 and you will have the sound you want. Lift has little effect on sound, so if you are just doing it for the sound, get a Comp cam with less lift to give your springs a break.
For more shock effect you might need a more open exhuast; that will make it lope harder as well as louder.

I would get the X3 and add some heads later. The AFR's are making great numbers with that cam.
You should be able to hit 400rwhp with the X3 and all the bolt-ons. I did with the slightly smaller X2.
Your 918's will not work with the X3. You will need a double spring like Comp's 921s, Crane duals, PRC, or Patriots.

I run them on XE-R .581 till 6600 rpms. Even TSP is shocking poeple by telling them they can run their 233/239 on 918's.

I used to run a 224/228 .581/.588, 112lsa cam, made 379rhwp and 352 rwtq, then I went to the X3, changed the springs to the 921's, redynoed and with a basic tune, still needs more tuning, and in hotter weather, I made 408rwhp and 373rwtq, JUST by switching to the X3, so it's worth it to me. Pulls much harder than my old cam and works GREAT on the street and track.
