Default What's wrong with the SLP H/C Package?

What's the deal with the SLP completed heads and cam package for the LS1. 500 claimed hp isn't huge (only 425 rwhp isn't the best H/C setup) but they're fully assembled, lift is .576 (almost .600 like a G5x3), and it's only $2500 for the package. I also notice that almost nobody on LS1 Tech has this setup. Most people on here seem anti-SLP, what's the deal?

PS This is preliminary H/C research, also looking at the AFR 205 heads and G5x3 cam (but it's a grand more than SLP)

save the money and get it right the first time. i just today ordered the arf heads w/g5x3 cam. i don't know whats wrong with slp,but they will not make more power then the LG set up. sit on the cash and save, you'll be much happier if you do. goodluck to ya.

do what he said.... you will not be dissapointed and you know will get a great product with great results. Or find another H/C combo that has been proven time and time again. try searching for different setups

BTW, .024" lift makes a little bit of a difference.

From what I've seen in SLP's cam list (which looks to
be getting shorter), they are not very aggressive
except in price. You could get a cam and pushrods
for the price of an SLP cam.

I think you'll have a hard time getting anything but
"marketing numbers" out of them, unlike the better
players in the LS1 aftermarket who can show you
flow data etc. You have to read their descriptions
very carefully, I often find they use metrics that are
not the norm, because apparently someone liked the
way those particular numbers looked, better. Like
everybody -but- SLP tends to use RWHP, 0.050-lift
durations and so on.

Not to say that they -couldn't- be nice heads. But,
how to tell amid all the hyperbolic marketese?

I've had mixed results from SLP products. I think it's
generally OEM quality (A4 'vert chassis brace aside),
non-envelope-pushing, sometimes technically shady
(SLP MAF, IAT module) but always overhyped and
overpriced. Though, when it finally falls into their
closeout bin, you can pick yourself up a good deal.
