Default AutoTap configuration

I'm looking to buy AutoTap but at the moment I have no laptop or PDA. I was thinking about buying the PDA version instead of the laptop since I could probably rigg up a glove box mount. PDA's can be had for cheap and I really have no other use for a laptop (ms windows) and nobody makes software for a Mac laptop.

Is there a drawback of going the PDA route vs. the laptop for autotap?
Ultimately I was planning on using an old desktop PC for running LS1 edit and doing the tuning in my garage. Am I too far off here or is this a viable solution for logging/tuning the car?

p.s. Any suggestions on PDA's would be helpful as well, since I have no clue about that kind of stuff.
