Default Cam bearing install questions....

My front cam bearing got scarred up badly recently, and needs to be replaced. What kinda tool is necessary to install cam bearings, and how are they installed? Would it hurt anything if I just replaced the front bearing and left the rest (the rest are not damaged, and the shortblock only has ~3800 miles on it, so they should be fine). Thanks, Shawn

I am no expert on this. But you are lucky that you only need to do the front. There is a special yet universal cam bearing install tool. Best price is about $75. Common is about $130. But for just that one take it to your machinist and probably get it done for nothing.

You need to get a dedicated installation tool. It makes installing and removing cam bearings alot easier. Here are some places:

I had my bearings pulled and replaced for $85, including new bearings. To correctly do this the shop will need the the block to be bare so they can line up the oiling holes in the bearings with the oiling holes in the block.
