Default Shift point RPM thresholds?

Anybody know the real purpose of kickdown (normal, hot & cold) shift RPM thresholds? I heard one guy set them all to 1024 rpm, in order to make the transmission shift at its' mph shift points. What does it represent?

Or the other way around? In other words, zeroing the mph tables and plugging the RPM shift tables...?
