Eruption At Mt. St. Helens

March 8, 2005

By KOMO Staff

SKAMANIA COUNTY - It appears Mt. St. Helens is having some sort of eruption. Video from our sister station in Portland, Oregon shows a plume moving off to the east/northeast.

So how many of you have lived here long enough to remember seeing the BIG eruption? I was just a 10 year old kid at the time, but remember it clearly.

I remember the big one. I was driving to a friends house after work and remember seeing this God awful black beltching cloud, thinking this is not good. This was South Hill Puyallup. We could see the eruption looking over the Hill towards Orting valley and Mt Rainer for quite a while. Awesome experiance.

I was 10 years old at the time and remember hearing the explosion. We got my parents up (brothers and I), then we went up on a Mountain near Olympia called Capitol Peak to watch her blow. We had a perfect view of the whole mountain and I will never forget it.

I remember mom woke me up that morning and told me to look outside. From Lynnwood it looked like a huge thunderstorm on the southern horizon. Oh, and by the way, you all who weren't even born yet are starting to make me feel like Mark.

I was down in Olympia @ Summit Lake. We didn't hear squat, the sound went right over us. But we woke to a quarter of an inch of ash all over everything. I still have that jar of ash I saved. I was ~13 at the time.

I was 4 years old... but since I was living in Hawaii, the ash plume wasn't quite big enough for me to see.
