Default How big of a Stall on stock transmission?

Well I've been reading and reading but no one seems to answer this question. I want to get a stall because I've heard they are just... awesome. Not sure if I'll do it right away but I want something that's going to be able to run on the stock transmission and not destroy it. I'm getting married and getting this car is where MOST of my money is going and I wouldn't be able to afford to get a new transmission if I blew the stock one ( or the rear end for that matter ). I am such a newbie to this stuff it's sad but I could really use the help from you guys who have them. I don't plan to add nitrous, just your basic bolt on's and MAYBE a cam down the road ( after it's paid for I'm thinking ). I may ask for this for christmas ( I know a long time off ) from my wife so it can't be too crazy expensive either.

in advance

get the converter and dont worry about what could happen down the road. The rear would likely be fine. the tranny could last years, or months. I mananged to find another tranny with 30K miles for $500 when the time came. for any aftermarket converter they will all have about the same affects on the transmission so get what ever would best suit your needs and future goals. Always look to what you may want to do down the road and go one size stall bigger than you want because you will find out that they are all very streetable.

Look at the ssf 3000 should be close to what your looking for, can get some good results out of this convertor. Just make sure U get a tranny cooler with it!

3000 is a little lower than I was thinking, I was thinking like a 3600 atleast but I don't know much about them so... I want it to run like a raped ape. I have to worry about what would happen in the future, I'm not sure if I'm going to keep my winter beater or sell it and use the money for mods on the TA ( and snow tires for sure ).

For a N/A application I would vote for a 4000 as well.

a 4000 makes me nervous, doesn't it affect the way the car drives? I just don't want to tear through the transmission till ATLEAST 90k ( car only has 18.7k on it ).

Will a 4000+ stall potentially cause more transmission failure issues than say a 3200 stall?
I know STR and other specs will be factors as well but I was just curious if there really was a direct correlation between stall size and tranny breakage.

Also, is a 4400 too big for a stock internal/bolt on motor?

A 4000 stall will not cause anymore issues than a 3200 stall. The biggest concern is cooling. Install a B&M 24,000 GVW Cooler and be done with it. I am running a 4000 stall and it runs not hotter than a 3000 stall. I rarely see over 165*F except when racing a the strip.

Stock trans here 70k, 20k with 3200 stall converters. Just keep the fluid clean, cool, & limit the WOT down shifts as much as possible.

My vote is for 3500.
Dont forget you will need to tune for a converter.

LOL! Last at least 90k.

My 01 had 21,000 miles on the clock with only lid and catback when mine blewup on my drive to work. I wasn't even getting on it.
It shifted in to 2nd after I made a left turn from a stop sign and BANG!

No more forward gears.

The dealer covered the waranty work and I had wanted a stall way before this happened, I still want a stall but I like my trans to work too.
What good is a stall for .5 tenths when the trans is fried.

I saw the trans tore down and alot of MAJOR parts that aren't suppose to break broke.

IMO, if you don't have enough money for a new/rebuilt/used/BUILT trans then you don't have money for a stall.

Still waiting for my rear to pop...

Good luck!

Well the car won't really move until the revs are kinda high. Maybe 2500+? (I haven't driven a car w/a high stall in 15 years.) It's a weird feeling after using a stock converter.

tuning and cooling are the biggest issues. i love the way my ssf3800 drives with 2.73 gears, and i am now having slight cooling issues that i am in the process of fixing. the tune will make or break your impression on the converter for daily driving. i've spent a couple hours (at different times but all together) tuning just my shift points, line pressure, lockup and pressure, unlock tps and lockup tps. it is great now, i get compliments all of the time like " i can't believe this car has that high of a stall and still cruizes and behaves like it does".

oh- at least 3500 (or vig 3200 which is rumored to be more like 3600)

What setup or program do you use to change your settings?

Thanks.
