My shortblock in my 2002 Z28 needs a new cam bearing in the front most hole. Both the radiator and AC compressor are off the car, and I'll even pull the nose if need be. Can the front cam bearing can be installed with the rotating assembly still in the block? I would assume that it (cam bearing) can be aligned properly since it is at the front, right? Also, when installing the cam bearings, do they go in from the front or the rear of the block, or does it even matter? Bottom line is, can this be installed with the shortblock still in the car, and from the front?

The front cam bearing is supposed to be installed from the rear of the block with it disassembled. I've done the front on an engine stand before on my own engines from the front side, but it was hard to get installed straight.

That was my post earlier just forgot to log in. If that cam bearing really is bad enough I'm sure you could figure a way to replace it without going any further. I've never seen a bad cam bearing in a LS1 though unless they were spun out from no oil pressure, seen some that "looked" worn but never had any problems with them and always had great oil pressure.
