Default Tires

I have a set of ZR1 wheels on my car. They are 17x9.5. I was wondering what is the widest series tire I could put on them. Would it be liek a 285/40/17 or could I go wider?

285 is the widest you can safely go.

285 is as wide as I would go. 275 is even better.

Would this appy to the same size in 18's? 275 being the widest you can go and be safe? And when you say 285 is not as same what do you mean ? It dont fit the rim?

I would go with 275/40/17 so I could rotate them and get a little more life out of them. I don't think 285/40/17 would work to good on the front. I'm not sure though.

I have 17x9.5 ZR1's with 285/40/17 on all 4 wheels. They work great. The 285 is about 1/4" taller and wider. No problems rubbing. I bought 285's because they were less expensive than the same tire in 275

Cool that's good to know. I haven't seen people run 285's all the way around. I'll keep this in mind when I need tires and the 285's are cheaper.

You can usually find the suggested rim width for a given tire on a manufacturers website. It will vary from manufacturer. I think Nitto's are more generous for this.
