Default What do look for in a used stall converter.

I am considering buying a used 3000+ stall converter. What should I look out for?

Everything. If you can even ID the converter you're doing good. Other than that check for cracks around the pump drive. Spill some fluid out of it and look for metal sparkles.
Even after all that you can still end up with with a blown up piece of junk thats going to ruin your transmission.

If you're lucky enough to have a converter rebuilder local you can have them cut it open and clean it out and inspect it. They charge more to do that for performance converters around here.
Or send it back to the manufacturer for that service. Add all this to the price.

ditto what was mentioned above
and make sure the paint is still on it. I mean, little nicks here and their - especially around the bolts are OK. But I have seen pics of where a trans got so hot it burnt the paint on the converter. Only seen it once, but still something to watch out for
