Default Chance to get a 408 dirt cheap!!! 408 owners inside please!!!

What do you guys think of this motor. It has 1,500 miles and I have a chance to get a great deal on it. Does it seem like an ok setup? I understand it is setup for a blower and I have considered changing the cam cause its a bit small for a 408 and maybe rasing the compression some as well. But overall what are you thoughts and opinions?

"Decided to move on to a new project. Selling my motor. It's complete from intake to oilpan with only 1,500 miles on it." Here's the goods-
New 6.0 iron block bored .030 over, line honed, decked, clearenced, and deburred
Eagle 4340 forged crank
Lunati pro billet rods
JE forged pistons (9:1 comp)
Coated Federal Mogul rod and main bearings
Rings were from More Performance
Rollmaster double roller timing chain
MTI R1 cam 232/236 274/278 114
New cam bearings
ARP head and main studs
Cometic gaskets
Ported oil pump
Absolute speed stage II heads LQ4 w/2.02/1.60 valves chambers smoothed and gasket matched. I have the flow sheet, flowed 308cfm on the intake@.600. Will have to check on the exhaust. Heads have Comp dual springs w/dampner
Comp R lifters
Will also include stock intake and throttle body
Everything was done right, I have over 1,600 in machine work alone. Also includes all belts and accessories. Should have it ready within the next couple weeks. Would be a perfect candidate for boost or juice.

P.S car has yet to be on the dyno. Is it resonable to ask him to put it on the dyno, he also said he has flow sheets. He thinks it will put out 470-500 put I'm thinking more like 450 due to it having LS1 stock Intake and TB. So I have an LS6 on the way.

sounds like a perfect setup :-) for boost, but nitrous LOVES compression, I am running 12.5:1

Stage II heads - need more info - heads make all the difference in the world

I can see 500rwhp in a manual with this setup

No its not gonna idel like a stock LS1, more like a 224 camed LS1.
For 6 grand it's a good pickup.
You might be even lower as that was the asking price if my memory serves me correct.
Adding compression will be more expensive then you might think, as to go from 9:1 to 11:1 its gonnarequire new heads, or new pistons. With the current setup you would never get the compression up to 11:1 by just milling and using a tiny head gasket. By switching to a milled LS6 head you could probally get in the mid 10 area, or buying new pistons, and rings would run you 800 bucks or so and then you have labor charges for tearing down the motor and puting it back together.

I have a sililar motor with a Launti Crank instead of Eagle, a 242/246 duration cam, Absolute Speed stage 2.5 LS1 heads, 11.4 compression and under 100 miles on it for sale if your interested.
Wouldn't be much more expensive.

The pistons are reverse dome and are 10:1 compression pistons. I figured it would be like a 224. Which lopes pretty good. I have considered selling cam and heads for new setup but I think my pistions are good right? I may just leave setup how it is for awhile until I have more money. Thanks for the suggestions so far I appreciate the help.

just remember, there are a lot of other goodies u'll need to buy to support that motor, like fuel pump, rear end, drive shaft, new m6 that can handle the power, all the suspension to support that much power. Probably another 5-10k right there.

I got spec 3 on the way with new slave and master. I have 4:10's coming and subframe connectors, I am resurfacing my flywheel. Car will be a street, nice weather only weekend car. I won't be tacking car to track untill I can afford a 12 bolt. Car will be on street tires as well. I already have lid, headers, duals and b&M. Think I can survive on this stuff for now. Ok here is the deal I'm getting. Entire engine above with computer(2000) harness and its already tune for $4,500. The guy is really cool and said if I ever change anything that I can use his username on the computer so I can get it re-tuned for only $150. I think this is a pretty sweet deal!!!!!

Nice...go for it!

I wish these kinds of engines were available when I blew mine back in '03. The cost has dropped greatly and there are many more used short/longblocks for sale nowadays...

Well I bought the engine and brought it back home. So now I am researching cams. I think I am going to keep my heads which are Absolute Speeds stage 2 LS6 style but I think I will be milling them so I can get up to 11.1, how much would I have to mill to get to 11.1-is this even possible or should I change to a different gasket? I think maybe a 240ish cam. I would like to be at 500 hp ang tq. Any suggestions????
