Default Where to get 10+ gals of solvent / Parts wash

My wife just bought me a 20 gallon parts wash from Harbor Freight.

Does anyone know where to get 10 or more gallons of solvent or WD-40 cheap? I'm think two 5 gallon buckets. I filled it with 10 gallons of water and it worked great and stayed at a high enough level.

Buying in indiviudual 1 gal containers gets real expensive real quick. I'd like to keep the cost down around $50-$75 if possible.

THanks,
David

This is the largest WD-40 I found... at a UK site unfortunately http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=90421

Ebay might have something too, worth a look.

Does it cut through grease and oil well? I didn't think water based products would work as good. It would be hell of a lot cheaper though

The Advance Auto Store near me carries it in 5 gallon cans. Did you check with Pep Boys, Murray's, Autozone stores etc. near you?

Yup, I got 10 gallons (2) 5 gallon drums at Advance Auto Parts called "Next Dimension Parts Cleaner," but it isn't cheap. I forgot if it was $19.95 or $29.95 for five gallons.

Thats not that bad. When you start adding up 1 gallon sizes of products, it quickly gets over $120 for 10 gallons

There is no Advanced Auto around me in LA. THe closest being in Calexico (border of California & Mexico).

I tried calling all of the Kragens around the LA area, and none of them have Oil Eater any more, nor can they order it , They do have Simple Green in teh 5 gallon size for $38. so I might check into that, but I wouldnt think Water based cleaners/solvents would work good.

Thanks everyone,
David

I wouldn't use a water-based solvent in a parts cleaner either.

I would try calling all the auto parts stores in your area. Maybe just go through the phone book. If that fails, you could probably order that stuff somewhere online.

I'll see what I can find online and get back to you.

I use Northern Tools part number 151516. It is presently $34.99 for 5 gallons and it makes 25 gallons of washer fluid. It isnt as fast as a solvent based fluid, but I have cleaned turbos and numerous other parts. The choice seems to be fast ( solvent based) or slow ( water based). It does leave a rust proof coating on the parts to help with flash rust after cleaning. Havent tried to paint over the coating, but it does prevent flash rust after cleaning. Hope this is of some value.

Kerosene has a very high flash point - not much different than charcoal lighter. Just like charcoal lighter fluid, you actually have to hold a match to something soaked with it to get it to light. That's why kerosene was/is used in homes for lamps. Relatively nonexplosive.

Kerosene works quit well as a solvent for cleaning. It smells much better than diesel fuel and is probably safer.
