Default GTO creator dies

John Delorean, creator of the first GTO in the early 1960s has died at age 80 in Summit New Jersey.

He gained notority when he was charged and convicted in the mid-80s of illegally importing $10 million of cocaine into the US as sales of his 6 cylinder alumium body sports car in the US "the Delorean" faded.

John had what can only be described as a "colorful career". A brilliant designer who be missed by the auto industry. R.I.P. John.

Thank god you gave him credit too.... Delorean was the father of the GTO not Jim Wangers (who seems to think he is)

There are some good stories about John in Smokey Yunicks autobiography. Smokey liked him which says a lot in my book.

John also created the original Firebird when pressuring GM management for a 2-seat rear engine Sports Car. Management gave him the Camaro platform which he used to craft the First Gen Firebird. Into the 1970's he continued to pressure GM management for a 2-seater mid engine sports car, which finally came to fruition after he left the company in the form of the ill-fated Fiero. It's often been said the Fiero would have been a succes had GM stuck to Delorean's original idea of a sports car, but inthe fuel crunch of the 1970's the car was redesigned at the last minute as a fuel miser commuter car.

God Speed John.

John Delorean brought Pontiac back from the grave and put some excitement into the division. Something it needs badly now.

Terrible news and almost as tragic that he had to see GM lastest 'thing' with a GTO badge on it.

And see it shot to pieces on Monster Garage I guess you could say the car failed twice.
