Me and another F-body owner are disputing because he is convinced that 98's are turds, and I am convinced otherwise. So please...informed opinions only.

there turd :D

we've had this discussion ad ad nauseam. are some 98's turds yes, are some 02's turds yes. its all a wash. the only think that can be considered a negative is the PCM support compared to 99+

i wouldn't consider my 98 a "turd"...the only real reason 98's are "turds" is that it is 7 yrs old and most have 80+k miles on them and they have been abused...things wear out...thus equalling a turd

my last car.... 98 Z28 M6 with just a lid and borla, put down 315rwhp 325rwtq on a mustang dyno....!

but they will dyno less than an 02.

I also wouln't consider mine a "turd." I have owned my car since November of 2003 and it only has 48,000 mi on it. That just shows that there are still some good 98's out there. Haven't had a problem yet.

4:10's tend to "unterdify" a car...:jest:

I would say my car is turdish, but I wouldnt say that to her face. :jest:

Like JRP said the PCM is more of a hassle to F* with, the 98 heads arent as good, and you have to buy a damn LS6 intake just to get it to 2000+ standards.

But I got mine for a good price, so if you are poor like me, a turdish 98 is better than no LS1 at all. :judge:

I have had nothing but good luck from my 98. 100,000 miles and no problems. Still have factory clutch, water pump, starter, and Alt. I bought it Jan 3rd of 98 and when it was new about 1,000 miles took it to the strip bone stock and it ran a 13.2 at 108. Not bad for a 98. Now I have all the mods in sig so if it was a turd it is no more.

I asked the same question when I first got mine, now im glad I saved the money on the actual car, and have more for mods. Once you start modding, its all the same..

yeah you could buy a lid and cat-back and be with all the other cars...not to mention the few thousand you save dhah

98s are NOT turds. They only dyno about 10 rwhp less than an 01-02, mostly because the later two years came with the LS6 intake manifold from the factory.

Once you break the seal on any of these engines, all playing fields are level.

My 98 is a big fat smelly steaming turd.
:turd:
Not really. It runs pretty much like brand new with a little more than 37k on the clock.

My 98 just passed 175000 and the only thing I have replaced is a couple hoses and the water pump. Motor is still strong - 13.2 at 109 last weekend.

Nothing at all wrong with 98's. In fact, there are many benefits to owning a 98. (other than the price!) Try doing a search, as JRP said it's been discussed a LOT.

98s are great. they dont have the ls6 intake, sure, but other than that they are awesome. No TCS, metal fuel tank, bigger fuel injectors, etc etc etc. The computer's a hassle though. My 98 A4 Z28 has just shy of 75K on the clock and runs good as new. Fires up first time every time, and never misses a beat. Never replaced a window motor. I Even put her through 4 ft of water and she fortgave me. My only complaint is that my one foglight leaks and gets crap in it. Also sometimes my electrical system seems a little shaky, but I need a new battery anyway.

Its all in how you care for the car. I certainly dont run my car into the ground, or abuse it. (usually ) so she'll last a good long time.

hope this helped you,
brad

'98s do just fine. My '98 is right on par with what my '00 was at the same mod level. Actually, I think my '98 is a tick faster mod for mod, but that's likely because it weighs less than my WS6 did.

Sure, the '01/'02 cars have some advantages over '98s, but there are some things I prefer on my '98 over an '01/'02 car stock for stock as well. Everything from a stronger stock flexplate, to a "working" temp gage, to the rearview mirror, to the gloss black trim around the windshield & hatch glass (rather than flat black on '01/'02), to far less torque management issues, to other things I can't even recall at the moment. My point is, I really don't feel that any one year is superior; they all have ups and downs on each other. It's all just personal opinion, but there is no truth to '98s being "turds", they simply aren't.

They also have the gray interior ( like the 99's ) which personally I don't like at all but otherwise it's got an LS1, that's what really matters.

Bone stock mine ran 13.27@ 105.4 mph. Mine has been great since the day I bought it.

What's wrong with the computers on 98's other than it's harder to find someone to tune them?

Just curious,,why would you list the metal fuel tank as a plus? The plastic tanks are lighter. Other than weight difference, I don't think there are any pros/cons to the fuel tanks.

These '98' engine posts always seem to get a lot of responses. I don't know many people who keep their LS1 bone stock. A used LS6 intake only costs around $300 :)

I see a post like this every other week. They are great cars and have a few features that are nicer than 99+. Some may say they are not as fast... take the manifolds and ls1 intake off and its a level playing feild with every other header/ls6 manifold car.

This turd is a low 11 second car....about to be a 10 second car, with 105k miles on motor/trans/rear end...stock suspension

sure she has a few squeeks here and there, but nothing some new bushings and shocks wont fix

Everytime i take my 98 to the track I am impressed because this car has exceeded every expectation i ever had for the car

yeah i dont really know man, just something that shot out of my head there. my exhaust sits pretty close to the tank so I thought maybe it could warp the palstic tanks after a while? prolly not tho. I am still kind of a newb. :)

My car is definetly not a turd.....I bought it in April last year with 71K on the clock. It now has 87K and is getting to get the rest of the mods done this summer. Start up every time and handles great. It has been a really good car.

Now the only thing I can say is on a hot July day last year with bald tires, free mods, and a lid, she ran 14.01 at 99mph in the 1/4 and 9.18 in the 1/8th. Thats the only :turd: :turd: I can think of......but thats all about to change.
