To give you a warning before opening it:

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. has killed plans for a new line of rear-wheel drive passenger cars slated to reach North American showrooms in 2008, in large part to free up resources to bring its next generation of large pickups and sport utility vehicles to market quicker.

Well I just went in the auto news forums to see if it was already posted in there and looks like yesterday bob lutz released this yesterday

This posted today at the Blog:

By Bob Lutz
GM Vice Chairman

Some news broke today about a reshuffling of our product plan, and I just want to clear one thing up before people get carried away.

Yes, we have canceled our plans to build rear-wheel-drive vehicles off the Zeta architecture. But that does not mean we've canceled plans to build rear-drive vehicles altogether.

We did not cancel the Zeta plans to save money, or to divert funds elsewhere that would've been used for product development.

We are simply reallocating resources (human and financial) to pull some other programs ahead and get other vehicles to market sooner. The press speculates this means we're doing it to get our next-generation large SUVs and pickups out sooner. You could see how one might reasonably come to such a conclusion.

Rest assured, we remain committed to developing RWD, premium,
high-performance, affordable vehicles, perhaps even a few with a trace of nostalgia baked in.

Blah blah blah.
After years of hearing GM blabber it doesn't matter who is talking anymore, I don't believe anything until it hits the showroom floor.

Mustang is looking better every day. Still wouldn't buy one though!

I like it myself... more of a sleeper... and I like subtle styling in some aspects. i've liked the holdens for quite a while.

And yeah hehe I posted the whole blog earlier after a major sigh of relief thought GM was shooting themselves in the foot at first. Granted I'd still be interested in a 300C

Right now they are is such a bad slump with designing a good looking car they don't have the money to take chances. Thank goodness they came out with the GTO. Give it a little more time and all the personal touches will start comming out from aftermarket dealers to make it look as you want. Glad the GTO has the best engine in it or it would really be a bad situation.

Look at the Camaro, no one bought it, it is not the best looking car. You just have an image of some retro styling que when you think of a Camaro which GM wants everything to be spanking new now. Same witht he GTO, the biggest comment is "it does not look like one".

It is a shame, if the GTO was a hit with looks, they would never put the LS2 in it (just like the Camaro and the LS1). Now they are trying everything to get it to move.

GM is always behind, start the new truck out with big 30" tall tires not bike tires, Put the scoops on the car the first year, put the new 427 in a retro looking Camaro (it would out sell everything) and price it with reason - make it $45k - have fun and offer a COPO Camaro, roll down windows, no air, etc., have a selection of nice rims for the cars, basically copy the aftermarket market.

I really hate to say this but the Mustang is showing up everywhere and this is still a SUV day and age.

I will shut up, I really want GM to succeed.

A $45K entry price is not gonna sell cars. That's the Corvette territory. It has to be around $30K with the V8 and well under that for the V6 versions.

GM is in a financial **** hole right now. They are doing everything they can just to stay alive. I have completely given up hope on GM. Unless I can find a decent used ZO6 at a somewhat reasonable price, my next car is going to probably be German.
