Question Which timing tuner are most people using?

I currently have just a msd rpm switch and soon I want to try an add a timing retard box. Just thought I would see how many people are using them and what type.

I had one that I bought from ramchargers. When I gave the part to the tuner to install and tune for juice this is what I got in response.

When we try to make a pull with it connected, it only
does three of the four things right that its supposed to do.

1. It operates in bypass mode just fine when N2o is not in use.
2. It activates the N2o at 3000 as programmed.
3. It retards ignition timing as programmed when activated.

The problem arises during the run at about 5200 RPM when the engine
suddenly backfires loudly for no reason and the engine shuts down as if
someone has turned off the key... No matter how we configure this box
EXACTLY as they state in their instructions, it fails repeatedly. We've
adjusted timing functions in both directions of base with absolutely NO
change/improvement in outcome. Fueling is also dead-on. We even turned off
the bottle and made a pull to where only fuel was injected and the
condition still persists, so it's definitely something in the timing
signalconditioning that it does that's causing the problem. When we completelyremoved that box from the circuit and operated the N2o hit manually fromthe switch inside the car, everything performed flawlessly and the engine pulled to redline- smooth as silk with no detonation anywhere in the RPM band. We're going to completely remove it again Monday and re-install theMSD RPM Switch and start over from there. I suggest sending that defective box back and get your money refunded.

By all means I don't doubt that the Tuner had a problem with that part. But I just thought I would see who else uses the box and if I should try it again. Just my luck to get a flakey "retard timing box" . LOL

I don't know how Phil measured this, because the timing tuner will not register on LS1edit (in terms of retard or advance timing) because of how it is installed at the crank trigger....I think he is assuming this part!

Is there an absolute need for a timing tuner with NOS?

They can pull timing out instead. But then when you are off the bottle just N/A then it will be a bit slower. Shouldn't be too noticable depending on the size of jet and hp.

The reason I want to get the TTB is so I won't lose any performance N/A, up untill now I had the timing pulled out to run the 150 pill I felt that there was some perfomance loss. So I hope this time the TTB is not defective and I will have optimal power.

if you have an editor such as HPTuners or LS1-Edit, you don't need it.
If you want to retard timing, you can do so with 2 programmings (NA, N2O) and that's it.
I use the timing tuner just for the timing... everything else is done through the NX-Maximizer.

Does anyone have any info on Cartek's timing tricker? I heard the timing tuner does not work with MSD's window switch.

There is no need for the msd rpm or window switch. The TTB will do the same thang. All in one.

J

I have the msd window switch as well I am going to sell it once the TTB is in place.

You should do the same CAribe

I too had a similar problem. This happened on two seperate occasions.I sent it back both times .They tested it sent it back and said it works fine .
They were correct. The unit was picking up a knock. The last time around we traced it to a bad pilot bearing.I replaced the pilot bearing and boom it works again.........go figure!! GOOD LUCK! its a good product and does as advertised.

Pilot bearing? And was it bad or what? If so anything that caused them to go out. I never had this problem before. I just spoke with my back yard mechanic and he put that in noob terms. Man if that doesn't fit the issue. Thank you so much for taking the time RMB to write that up.Thanks

The pilot bearing was replaced when I did a clutch change....it was wore out....I would suspect that your problem has somthing to do with a knocking /thumping/some abnormal vibration that the knock sensor is picking up.It may well be a pilot bearing but once again we are faced with reality....it will probably be some other pain in the *** that you will spend time hunting down.I wish you the best of luck.

i was thinking of getting a timing box for my t.n.t kit. will the window switch work with it. what if you spray a 150 shot and the box fails. will the nos still spray and maybe kill the motor by not retarding? can you test it to see if it works?
