Default What's the biggest cam with a stock converter?

Searced....sucks. What is the biggest cam I can go with a stock converter. I am not buying an aftermarket converter because I drive this car every day 500-700 miles a week. Aftermarket converters just dont have the reliability. I will slowly do all the bolt ons. Just seeign how big I could go. Is the 02 Z06 cam to big? Car 99 Z with 3:15's

Thanks, Andy

The biggest concern when running a stock converter is the idle speed. Stock rpm in drive is 550. Once you get above 700 rpm, the car wants to pull against the brakes. That means you'll be limited to cams with small degrees of overlap like the Z06 cam, the LPE GT2-3 cam (207/220 118.5LSA), Vinci 210/218 cam, or the TR Old Man Cam (214/220 115LSA). If you get a factory converter with higher stall like a Trailblazer converter, you'll be able to run a bigger cam and still keep your reliability high. The Trailblazer converter stalls about 800 more rpm than stock. It's what I would run if I were in your shoes.

Thanks, Andy

i'll agree with the above...you are still going to be running a fairly small cam unless you get an aftermarket converter...ie: the zo6 cam like you want

Any idea where to get a Trailblazer converter? I don't want the Z06 cam so to speak I was just trying to get a ballpark figure of what will work.

I've put TR224/114 cams in stock converter equipped cars and have them idling good. Will be installing a TR220/114 in another one tomorrow.

Do a search for trailblazer converter in either the truck performance or truck drivetrain forums. You'll find the GM part number there.

I used to drive (and race on the weekends) my Vig3200 equipped Camaro SS well over 1100 miles a week for two years, hell I even took it to Texas from Ca (over 3000 miles one way!) to visit relatives twice. If that is not reliable, then I don't know what is.

Does it matter what year TB convertor you have to order or are they all the same?

The year doesn't matter as long as you get the converter from the 4.2L inline 6. Don't get the 5.3L V-8 converter, LOL.

That's the part number for the inline 6 converter. I double checked.
So, could I get away with the Z06 or something similar now?

I was considering using either CompCams 206/212 112lsa or their 212/218 115lsa high lift cams for my stock converter/no tune setup. I chose the 206 cam because of the tighter lsa. I then used 1.85 rockers to get the higher lift. This little combo makes a very noticeable improvement from off idle up to 6000+. The power improvement is across the board. HTHs
