I can't launch above 1000 rpms, without spinning. I may have finally figured out just the right pedal mashing speed when launching though (we'll see at the track this coming season). Ya gotta practice, practice, practice. Launching is more than half the race at the track.
Street racing mistakes to avoid:
1) racing anywhere but the highway
2) taking anyone too lightly (go all out or don't go)
3) acting like a 'ricer' when you lose
Good Luck, have fun

Take it to a parking lot and practice your launches, find something that works for you.
As for your shift RPMs, I think most people who are close to stock use right around 6k .... mine redlines at 6800, but I usually shift around 6k anyways, unless it's a good race, then I'll spin it up to 6600 or so.

For awesome launches, DR's big help, no spin. At the track, or anytime else on the street with the DR's on, I launch between 3000-3500 RPM. Even then I need to walk out the clutch, like the STi bubba's do, or it'll just be a smoke show. Haven't really tried much on my street tires. As for shifting, normally between 5500-6000. TCS is off at the track, usually leave it on for regular driving, doesn't matter from a roll if it's on or not and if I roll up and know it's about to go down, just a quick tap of the toggle switch.
