Default Stock Intake ???'s

What is the purpose for the massive plastic section connected to the stock intake? I'm talking about the piece right behind the actual lid that goes out towards both sides as wide as the lid.

Does it make the car quieter? Change sound? Better MPG?

I'm planning to take it off, i'm just curious.

It's just there to cut down on the "noise" of the air entering the engine.

Any aftermarket airlid will require you to take it out.

I didn't noticed any increase in underhood noise after my lid install.
