Default Did your 10 bolt do this

I have searched many of the other threads and couldn't find a diffinitive answer to my questions so here it goes.

I have a '01 WS6, A4, 3.23. I was crusing down the interstate @ 80 mph when I heard the dreaded rearend whine.
I let of the gas and decelerate, still there. Change speeds, still there. It does it at all speeds wheather I'm accelerating or decelerating but no clunking or banging.

So, I pulled of the cover and inspected what I could no broken teeth but I found some very small metal shavings on the magnet.

Anyone know what it could be? Can I fix it myself? If so what kind of special tools would I need? How long can I drive it like it is? I plan on going to a 9" or 12 bolt in the future, so I would like to keep from spending alot of money on the POS 10 bolt.

TIA.

If it is there at all speeds I owuld suspect a bearing failure. It should change pitch as the speed goes up. Most gear noise will be either coast or drive(rarely both), or at a certain speed. If the gears look good with no sharp edges, chipped teeth or pitting, I would check the bearings next. Grab the pinoin yoke and try moving it around. It should rotate obviously, but not have movement in any other direction- up and down or side to side.

Thanks. Is it possible to change the bearings myself? I went to Advance Auto Parts and they sell a bearing and seal replacement kit for 99 bucks. it's made by southern gear.

You will need some bearings pressed on, a dial indicator to set/check backlash, and an in/lb torque wrench to set pinion preload. You could use a solid spacer also.

Last year my car sounded like it had a supercharger hooked up to thr rear axle. The pinion bearing was bad. We turned the yoke and it was clicking. Turns out the posi was fine, but the pinion bearing was just that bad.

Is there any instructions or procedures on how to change the bearings in a rearend? i.e. what has to be removed/disconnected to remove the pinion.

Black00TA, I'm LMAO at the photo in your sig.

yeah, gear whine will change pitch with rotational speed and will tend to be louder on either accel or decel, but not both. Bad bearings will be less of a whine and more of a just a light roar or grinding sound and will stay pretty constant. I have gear whine in two of my cars. and I've had a few bearings go bad over the years. Definitely a different sound.
