Bad Cat?

Bad Cat? Well there has been a clanking sound under my car and I looked everywhere and couldnt find anything. So i got a mallet and gently tapped on my catalatyic converter and I'm 99.9999% sure that the sound is coming from there, because when I tap it, it sounds like something is moving around in there and it makes the same sound when I'm driving my car. My question is: what can i do to cure this? Will I have to buy a brand new cat or is there and easier way out?
