You would be suprised how lite you could get the stock column after you gut it! It's not worth buying an aftermarket column unless you are moving your seat rearward in my opinion.

The Bull
It's a easy do it yourself mod. A 3 on a scale of 10 if you have some welding and cutting skills. You can either pay the bucks for a kit that comes with most of this or make it yourself. Bickel and Vanishing Point both sell them as piece parts or as a kit.
The parts are simple, two u-joints that use a 3/4" shaft. One of them should be splined for your rack. The other is 3/4 to 3/4, one end of them is a bolt on. The steering shaft itself is 3/4 moly tubing. If you are doing a quick disconnect you can weld the spline end of the removable steering wheel hub to the shaft. Then buy the nylon or teflon slides. The black ones are a little thicker than the white ones. They press fit into a 1-1/4" OD 1-1/8" ID tubing. That shaft is what gets bolted in, so make your bolt in bracket to that piece. The actual steering shaft slides through that. Make it as long or short as you feel comfortable with. Bickel sells a firewall seal that you should be able to retrofit to the firewall hole for the 3/4" shaft. Overall, 25 pounds is pretty close depending on what wheel and u-joints you get.

Lots of parts to take out for the hardcore drag guys. Unfortunately there isn't much to touch for those of us with street driven cars...

I know its an old thread but.... same question how about the present? Anyone making a bolt in kit for ls1 f-bodies?
Can someone list the pros and cons of this mod? Is this safe and a good idea for a street only driven car?

DMH Fabrication makes a bolt in column.I picked mine up without an ignition switch but he has one with the switch option.For turn signals I am using this turn signal module from Speedway Motors http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Hi-Tec...dard,2366.html thats uses two momentary switches to work.Here is the thread about the dmh columns.https://ls1tech.com/forums/drag-raci...ng-column.html

I have it in the car now (fits perfect, got that in last sunday)
When you're over next, and you see how I had it built (couple inches longer to get the wheel closer to me since I had the seat moved back) it is awesome. It's right where I wanted the wheel, fit right in like a stock piece and weigh's NOTHING compared to the stock one. The removable wheel, makes getting in and out even easier now.
Between that, and now the room I have to move the cage out towards the doors the car's gotten a ton more room in it.
BS there's probably a good chance, that if you put these door panels in your car that you'd be able to put a cage in and have the room you want/need, especially with this column and the removable wheel. There's potential for alot more room for a guy substantially bigger then me now (and I'm 6'3 about 260)
