Default Valvespring thoughts...

HMMMMM I am being an indecisive bitch about valvesprings.

My choices are down to:

918's with stock retainers $152
SDPC Manleys $204 with titanium retainers
RPC kit (patriot golds) $269

The second two while costing more have alot of value in the kits, but the 918 is a proven spring and it does cost less. The Manleys sound like they are borderline for my XER 581 lift cam so while being the best value I don't know. The RPC's sound good but that is alot of spring is there any disadvantage to running too much spring? Am I over analyzing this and it really won't matter which one I pick?

Any other thoughts???

I've researched the crap out of this but am having trouble pulling the trigger...

I'd just run the Comp 918s... nice reliable spring for a cam in that lift range.

Are the LS6 retainers the same as the LS1's?

If not then I vote for any that requires you to purchase new retainers so I can have your LS6's. See how easy that was.

You do not want to run "too much spring" The increase spring pressure puts added stress on the valvetrain that my not be necessary.

I also wouldn't run springs that were borderline. You probably want a little safety margin.....springs do get weaker as they age.

I thought the LS6 had Ti retainers already.
Overall though, I'd go with the Comp 918s if they match your cam.

I wish I could get a SOLID answer on the LS6 retainers, if they were titanium then it would be a no brainer. But I think I'll do the 918's anyways if I wanted to upgrade to Ti retainers at a later time its pretty easy. I will check to see if they are when I have them off.

Mikey LS6\LS1 springs are interchangable and use the same retainers so my springs will work on any motor LSx motor you get.

Mine ls6 ones were steal. I am assuming that cam is with an xer lobe profile. If it is you will need a good spring. I would say probely a stout single would be fine. Their are advantages of running a double spring though like if the outside ciol breaks it will keep the valve from taking out the piston. To much srping pressure will put alot of added stress on the valve trian, but what kind of push rods you going to run, rocker arms? I would just call comp and ask what springs they would go with, they built the cam they will know what willl work the best.

Its an MTI cam and they recommend Manley Nuteks, but that would be the Borderline according to the specs, some places they are good to .575 others they are .600. The comp cams according to the website are good to .625 so that is plenty of wiggle room. Pushrods are just going to be hardened and I'm going to run the stock rockers. I may go to a different setup but if I do it will be the high dollar ones so I'm goign to have to wait a little while.

Did you have stock LS6 heads at one point??

The Manleys are supposed to be good for .600-.625. I run them on my car but I only have about .560 lift. I have run it to 6700 rpm with no float. Racehead has run them to 6700 too but his ASA cam is only .525 lift. They are supposed to be comparable to the 918s, and you get Ti retainers.

IMO I'd go with them, or the Patriots. How fast is the ramp rate on that cam? If it's a faster lobe profile, the golds may serve you better. It takes a little more spring pressure to make sure the valves close on time.

I appreciate the post but all that did was confuse me more

The specs on the cam are 224/220 581/ 581 116 straight up. So if the Manleys for SDPC are good enough and I will not get any performance benifits with approx the same reliablity\durabity I'd go with them cause that is a good deal...

I don't know what else to tell you Bobby. All 3 are SUPPOSED to be good enough for that cam. The Manleys are certainly the best deal, which is why I bought them. Maybe Ellis or Ryan knows some reason not to get them. I do not.....

Well I did not want to have lifter issues so i went with the springs Mark has which are second on your list. Install was great because we were not fighting the inner Spring like on Stephs car. We found the best tool to be an old twist type. Did nto have to mess around with mush stuff. We had all the others in the shop trying them all and in the end the good old twister was best for us

Cory just installed a set on his Hummer also and was very happy with them.

I have only had the Vert to 6,500(224/228 .534/.537 112) but no problems. $204 with Ti retainers is a steal

Not to mention Steph E-Bay'd the Ones we took off for $30

After looking at the Z06/Hotcam springs I would not use them IMHO for much but a stock cam upgrade.

Good luck man!

how many times do i have to tell you... get the manleys. i've used them on 3 or 4 cars. two were c2 cams, and one was a cam with .591 lift. the VE on a stealth II isn't going to be very hard on springs anyway. the seat pressure is higher on the manleys too if i remember correctly.
