Retarding usually gains top end power were advancing it gains bottom end power. If you gain power everywere in the curve when ya retard it the engine wants more cam.

This brings up another question retarding the cam reduces DCR how is the cam going to make more power aside from spinning it higher.

well most cases cams allready have 4* advance, retarding that to 0* (straight up) will bring the power band up by around~200rpm or so, depending on how big the cam is and the VE's.

The later intake closing events (due to the retarded cam positioning) helps to fill the cylinders better at very high RPM....essentially, the motor hangs on a little longer. This usually occurs close to or just after the engines "peak" HP figure when the TQ curve is already heading south. The DCR is higher there due to the slightly better cylinder fill the later intake closing events provide.

On this I have seen when ya retard the cam you can run more timing, and retard the timing when you advance the cam.

true, I noticed that with my Stealth II that is 116+0 lsa, it does accept more timing but funny enough, it doesn't really make much more power (the reason was explained in a previous J-Rod post)

I have a few questions on this and see this now and then asked about different cams.

A)Why do cam manufactures put advance in there cams, seems common. Simple answer(s) side. I have heard its to help with worn timing chains. It is a basic old school like many other parts sold for LS1’s trick for performance.

B)Do we really need more advance from the cam? Dyno tune or tuner can add more and other cheap bolton’s that can be removed if not wanted.

C)If running a smaller cam can the stock ecm work with no advance better?

D)Is the stock cam LS1 advanced or is that 0? LS6?

E)Looked at J-rods write up, advanced. Looking for a simple answers I guess.

I think running my little 216/220 114lsa+4 retarded to 0 advance would be the way to go. Gives the computer more adjustment room and not adding much if any hp vs possible drivability issues. (bad gas) For a more all out race application I would think the +4 advance would be good. Not for a daily driver. Please let me know were my thinking is wrong or even comp cam did a lot of work and the cam was built to work with +4.

Sounds like yuo are confusing cam timing with ignition timing.

It will certainly idle better on a +0, kinda Stealthy. (not that it is very lopey to begin with)

Nice info. in here so far.
Advancing = more peak torque at a lower rpm
Retarding = slightly less peak torque, but more hp at higher rpm due to better top end breathing dynamics.
However, be careful if you are running tight tolerances. Retarding the cam also tightens your Piston to Valve clearance on the Exhaust stroke since as the piston is coming back up, your Exhaust valve is closing later.
Also, my guess is that most cams for LS1's are ground with advance because that produces more peak torque in the RPM band that street driven LS1's live in. You could probably retard the cam and make more peak hp turning more rpm, but it might be outside the ability of your heads to breathe enough, and also your valvetrains rpm limits.

huge cams are usually advanced because they'd peak way beyond what most valvetrains are designed to take. so by advancing it you make the big cam act 'smaller' by lowering the peak to a more usable range, effectively making it 'smaller' that's why i don't see a point in advancing huge cams, it has all the downfalls of a big cam, but it doesn't go like one. now a smaller cam retarded can act big, as in peak higher, using the rpms to make horsepower. not only efficient, but also stealthy.
but that's not popular, so it must be wrong :/

With that said, would it be good to set the comp 216 220 without any advance? Would it make more power on a daily driver with the stock rev limiter?

Yes it would be good, but changing the rev limiter and shift points is necessary to benefit from that.
Even with an off the shelf with +4 you need to do that to benefit from the added power range.
