Default pinion wont tighten???

im redoing my rear again tonight, the pinion has some forward and backward play in it. maybe .002-.003 and ive tightend it up and it still has play.
i really tightend it w/ 3/4 impact. still play. pinion depth is correct. but the pinion is so loose it spins so freely.
throw a couple more pinion shims in for the hell of it or what?

well my pinion depth is supposed to be 2.284 and measures now at 2.273 so adding shims will make it closer which is going the wrong direction. any ideas??

What is your pinion bearing pre-load at now? It should be about 25 inch/lbs. Assuming that you are using a crush sleeve and not a solid spacer...The shims are what set the pinion depth, but tightening the pinion nut to crush the crush sleeve is what sets the pinion bearing pre-load. Some of the crush sleeves that come with the Ratech kits take a crazy amount of tq to get them to crush.

my crush sleeve was not crushing. my 3/4 impact didnt do it. i was afraid of holding it on there too long and snapping it off. i used my old crush sleeve, assembled it, and it seems to be fine now. test drove it and its smooth. probably not a good idea to use the old one. but whatever works... till next time.

Ya a new crush sleeve can be a bear. You have to hold the pinion & tighten it up. There are special tools. Or a monster pipe wrench. That also what sets the pre-load on the pinion bearing is the crush sleeve. The old sleeve will not provide near as much pre-load.

The best way to check this is to take out the crush sleeve, inspect it, and see if you can get your bearing pre-load without the crush sleeve installed. Be sure to use oil on the washer and pinion nut, this helps to avoid friction also.

what would the pinion bearing preload be when using a solid spacer??? I tried getting it to 25inlbs but i couldnt i needed a .005" shim and i only had a .010" shime so im around 5in.lbs. right now and im not happy with that and with the .010" shim out i had 65in.lbs which i felt was to tight ( am i wrong with that?) an I have a terrible whine and howling from the rear but i also got richmond gears 3.73.... its that loud i can hear it over my radio... but other then that the rear works GREAT no cluncking or anything like that....

The shims you are using behind the pinion gear have nothing to do with your bearing pre-load. Bearing pre-load with used bearings should be around 10-12 lbs/sq in. new bearings 20-25 lbs/sq in.

You are on the right track. Get the .005 and maybe some .003 shims if thats what it takes to get it where you need to be.

And check your pattern again to get to the cause of that noise.

Im using a solid pinion spacer im not talking about the pinion bearing shim...I know that shim sets your pinion depth.. ...

Im also thinking about taking the richmond gears out and putting somthing else in to solve the noise, because i hear that richmond are very noisy gears ... Thanks for the information
