Default T-56 noob, first question

I just picked up my first T-56 (literally, damn it's heavy) and noticed it does not shift, the shifter moves back from, what I assume from the position of the shifter, from neutral to what again I'm assuming is 4th-- and that's it. I know the 6m has a few gizmos on it and it's been over 4 years the last time I drove a car with a T-56 and don't remeber this. Is this normal for this trans that's just sitting out of a car -- or did I get screwd?

BTW: I got it to swap out the T-5 in my '85 Rx-7. Needed the 6th cog to help out on the highway with 4.10 gears in the rear end.

The guy I got it from said it's been sitting in his garage for 8 years waiting to be put in his '68 camaro, but then didn't want to modify his trany tunnel so he went with a rock crusher. Said he got it "new".

No its is not normal. You should be able to get all gears. Reverse will take alot of effort without powering the solenoid. It will take some effort shifting without a stick on it ( for mechanical advantage) but all gears should be available. If you only have 4th, there is a problem.
