They should cc at around 61cc in stock configuration.

Richard, And that should put my motor around 11/1 compression on a stock displacement/ bore, correct? Or close to it. Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't run a stock 5.3 head. I doubt it will make as much power as a stock 5.7 head

John, Brent and Bo are right. Don't run the 5.3l heads in stock form. The compression increase isn't worth the loss in flow with the smaller intake valves. Have the heads professionally prepped and then enjoy your hotrod. Otherwise stick with your LS1 heads.

Thanks Guys I'm having a set done as we speak. I bought a used set of Katech heads and was having them cleaned and checked. I was wondering how much was milled off them. They were 853 heads to start with. The machine shop said they check by cc the heads. I need to know what the 5.3 heads cc were to compare and to see how much if any needs milled off. John the best way to check them is to measure the deck height to short bolt hole height. On a stock head it should be close to 1.6"
Most of them time the chamber is a few CC's larger after porting so if you really want to know how much is milled check the short bolt hole to deck.

just measure it. Go to a drug store and buy a syringe(sp???). See how many MLs/CCs it takes to fill it up. There is your number. Be careful when it gets to the top as water will overfill on the sides. You will get within about 1cc with this method.

Brent, is that 1.600" exact and the same for a 5.7L head? Out of curiosity I just measured mine at 1.579". I was supposed to have .035" shaved off the heads (not your heads), but only looks like .021" off. Definately throw my CR out of whack from what I thought it would be.

Yeah, is that 1.600" exact and for 5.7 heads too? I need to check my '98 heads on my LS1. A friend worked them over but we can't remember if we milled them or not and I need to know for my pushrod length.

GTA91, That is what I used to gauge my heads.
But I will check my old heads and get back to you.

*Also, I did the other measurement from the valve cover plane to the deck plane and it actually is parallel... I got about 7.4XX all over the place. I'm about 99.9999% sure my heads aren't milled.

Jeremy, I measured my old 853 heads and the short bolt side is 1.60" it was consistant on all bolts. Hope this help.

My new heads were milled .032 ths. I wanted to go with a bigger lift cam. But I'm going to be safe and use my 228R cam with .588 lift. Glad it helped.
