Default Any A4 running Comp Cam 216/220...what rpm is your idle set at?

Anyone with an A4 running a Comp Cam 216/220 (XR269HR), I was wondering what your idle rpm is set at. Mine is currently at 800, but I think I may be able to go 50-75 rpm lower. This would reduce creep and also give a bit more gentle "thrum". I love the response of this cam (rated from 1300 to 6300 rpm) from off the line all the way through the top end. This car really pulls. I had this cam installed with 2003 LS6 heads, an LS6 intake manifod, LS6 injectors, Dynatech Supremaxx headers with high flow cats and X-pipe, an LS2 timing chain, with an existing Blackwing and GHL Bullet exhaust. My tuner installed a "safe tune" as his dyno isn't up and running yet. He will dyno tune it next week and then I'll know what it's putting out. All I know is that it's pretty damn quick!

I think you could easily lower your idle speed a bit. My "in gear" idle speed is set at 825 rpm with my cam which has a longer duration, a 112 LSA, and is rougher idling than the Comp 216/220.

My 800 rpm is an "in-neutral" idle. What is yours in neutral? Thanks!

XTROOPER: with those mods, you're only running mid-low 12's @ 115? mph seems kinda low , my 99 auto ran high 12's@111 with 3.42 gears, off road x pipe, and cold air.
u should be trapping close if not just over 120mph

What is your lope like? Does the engine ever die, or hesitate, when you begin to accelerate? Thanks!

I have this cam and am waiting for some other parts before I put it in. I'm curious how much advance you installed it at. Does it pull alot harder throughout the whole rpm range vs. stock cam?

I want a cam like that. I have a TSP 231/237 .598/.595 @ 112 on my A4 w/ 3000 stall and it only idles at 850 Pulls like MF though through 6900rpms. Seriously, I would trade for a smaller cam like that.

It has a small lobe(small cam ), The engine never dies and when I step on the gas, It is instant response. hope that helps..

Just say the word CAT3 and that T1 will be shipped and on its way I am in need of a larger cam, seems like a nobrainer!!

The cam has +2 advance ground in...don't know if the installer added any more, or not, when he put it in. I think he installed it "by the book", so I believe that's what it is. Yes, it pulls a lot harder through the whole rpm range, from right off the line up to the shift. It really comes alive during the rpm run-up, but I don't exactly know at what rpm level that occurs, and if it is soley due to the cam or the cam/heads/header combo. The 1-2 shift is set at 6200 rpm right now and the 2-3 shift at 6400 rpm. Only had a couple of runs as I my oil pressure was acting kind of screwy, so my tuner will be installing a ported oil pump next week. Carrying a "safe tune" right now, and he's going to give it the full dyno tune next week, after he finishes with the oil pump. I'll know all the dyno numbers at that point, and be able to test more. I'll be noting what happens at various rpm levels, etc., The oil pressure was always rock solid before, don't know what could have changed there. I think I'm going to love this cam. Very streetable, a very cool, sexy idle, and great power all the way through the band. I was not all that concerned about peak numbers, more with increasing the area "under the curve". Thunder Racing says this Comp Cam is one of their most popular cams...there's a reason for that. You will love it, too!

It sounds like you have a pinched oil pump O-Ring. I think your "Tuner" knows this by now. If you installed the LS2 timming chain I would imagine the oil pump was removed and reinstalled. This is a serious condition, I would not be running the car until this is fixed.

I tried changing the oil filter on the chance the relief there was bad...no help. The tuner called, asked about the results of the filter changeout, and told me he's going to install a new ported oil pump. He said he believes the oil pump relief valve may be sticking. He said to be very careful driving the car in and if pressure drops below 20 lbs to immediately stop and have it towed in. When I did take it out to play a little initially, the pressure was running between 35-43 lbs. I figured that was safe enough for a run or two...hope I was right. On a cold start in the morning the pressure takes a few seconds to come off of zero (and the low oil pressure alarm comes in) and then it rises to the low thirties. When you're driving, sometimes it's in the forties and sometimes in the low thirties. It's scary as heck. Wouldn't a pinched o-ring always act the same, and not change from time to time when you're driving? I'm not driving it again until I take it in. BTW, my tuner is Doug Rippie of Doug Rippie Motorsports (DRM). He's nationally known as a Corvette tuner, is a man of integrity, and really knows his way around these cars. However, he didn't personally install the package as he was in the process of moving his business. The fellow who did appeared to be extremely careful, but may have made an error, I don't know. Doug has now gotten personally involved. Any further thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Didn't you see my 60' time? That should have given you a hint to the answer to your question. The fact is, I was spinning my tires a third of the way down the track last year to get the times I did get.

This year with my bigger, but softer-hitting converter and Nitto DR's on the rear, I hope to break into the 11's (I ran the time in my sig with a Yank 3000 and street tires). My trap speeds should also improve though I doubt I'll see 120 mph making 402 rwhp.

I had that Cam put in almost 2 years ago At RPM in Texas. Chris Robinson (OBSSSD) did the tuning and idle was set at 750 in drive, park and neutral. It handles the AC just fine, gets decent mileage and drives good. Has only a slight lope.

Quick Reply: Any A4 running Comp Cam 216/220...what rpm is your idle set at?
