another 9" vs 12 bolt thread
ok ive been searching this up and getting mixed opinions, some say go 9" some say go 12 bolt if its A4(which i am), some say 9" with FI, and others say if 10 seconds or less to 12 if 9 seconds or faster go 9", so im gonna give my situation and see what you guys come up with
daily driver A4, sees the track only a few times during the summer, tring to store it for the winters, plan is a forged 383 with spray, but thats not gonna happen for a least a few years
my 10 bolt is starting to howl so im trying to figure out how much i need to have saved up before this thing goes out, im also looking for pros and cons to either one
and i dont plan on going any faster than 10s
oh and can you guys explain what makes a 9" gear swap easier, i know nothing about the 9"

an a4 is much more forgiving on rear ends, thats why some guys get away with running DR's on the 10 bolt. if your an a4 i say go 12 bolt, a 9'' is the strongest, but not worth the price for an auto IMO.

Rear ?
On the street, use the 12 bolt.
Its lighter and requires less horsepower
to turn. If your ready to beat the hell out
of your car at the strip, Go 9". I have 12 bolts
out there running in the low 9's for years.

12 bolt
I have not heard of anyone breaking a
well prep 12 bolt on the street yet.
In fact I have 10 second 10 bolts
out there that have lived way beyond
what was expected. The trick is to
never wheel hop the rear. This is usually
cured by eliminating stock rubber bushings.

Are those 12bolts running a full spool, or posi or locker setup?
What axle spline etc?
I've heard of blown 9"s and 12bolts, mainly with posi units... I'm in the market now and got a very nice quote on a 9" but I'm still considering options..

Hi Torque Mark Williams axles and full spool.
Posi units will all fail sooner or later. Posi units dont like the Burn-out
box much either regardless if its in a 9" or a 12 bolt.
Lockers are the best choice for the street/strip guy.
And you know what? The only housing I ever broke in one of my own personal
Top Sportsman cars was a 9" housing. It was braced like we have done for years but it was a stock Ford housing with all the good other stuff. At KTS we now use a Housing from a vender that we modify. Its bad *** bullet proof.

Locker- Locks the two axles together when needed.
Spool- Two axles locked all the time, essentially, one long axle.

As for the Strange 12 bolt, no need to shorten the DS. If anything, you may need to buy a new U-joint depending on which yoke you got. Search will help ya on that one.

strange 12bolt is a good idea. i personally street a moser 9" with all the goodies, full spool and 35spline gundrilled axles. the only time its a pain in my *** sometimes is when i try and make a 90 degree turn uphill to 20-25% bank in my driveway. other than that its perfectly well mannered once you learn its not a posi and learn how to drive it accordingly. even with a POS spec3 clutch its easy to drive.

i prefer the 9" as with having a 4ch abs setup it was the same price for extra insurance and piece of mind. it is street/strip use
locker,35 spline gundrilled axle's other than parking lots its barley noticeable .
even then its not all that bad just push the clutch back in if it gets real jumpy
if you have a 3ch setup either delet the abs or go 12bolt
