Default few LS1 motor build questions...

OK. I just burnt a piston up real bad. since i am a lil short on funding my plan is to get a big beefy short block goin for now and throw heads, intake, and a gigantic cam in in the winter. I am shooting for 600 rwhp on pump gas.

Now i know some of these might be newbie questions, but i do need a lil help here.

1. I want to rev the **** out of this motor...I was thinkin an SLP 402 rotating assembly or even just a forged 347. can that set up put up with a ton of boost/HP and seeing 7000 or 8000 rpm's at the track?

2. What do you high boost/horsepower guys use for headgaskets?

3. are head studs needed for this type of aplication or will ARP bolts do?

If you guys have any info/comments/suggestions on an alternate engine size or anything i have forgoten i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again,
Jim

7,000 rpm sounds doable, but 8,000........
SLP? Seriously? Nobody around here much cares for them....

The FI section might be more helpfull.

only two things I can say are:

SLP = over priced and under quality.........go somewhere else and get more for less

head studs are MUCH better than head bolts...easier to install heads with and work better/stronger........wouldn't use anything else....

Ditto on the ARP head studs. Saves the threads in your aluminum block.

Just say no to SLP.... There are plenty of good sponsors who can build you a nice short block for the same price. Get you a nice turbo, a 347, AFR castings ported by TEA with a forced induction nitrous port, cometic gaskets, and head studs. It'll be hard to lift a head with that set-up. That's what I run on my car.

I'm planning on maxing out my d1sc or running an *** load of boost. can you pull a head off in the car with head studs?
anyone have any suggestions on rods/pistons/crank that can handle like 650-700 hp on race and 600 on pump?

Call the guys at East Side Performance. They are doing a lot of superchargers lately.I have had tuning done from there myself. They are a bunch of good guys in my opinion.

Forced Induction aspects...either turbo or blower, make sure you get the compression ratio right for it. I wouldn't go much higher than 9.5:1 but 8.5:1 or 9:1 is better, which means until you get that, you might be wishing for the higher compression. Fuel systems with FI are a must! Tuning is a MUST! 600 RWHP isn't a problem on boost, but probably no need to spin the motor to 8000 RPM on boost, even on a 347. Stock crank should be ok for your needs, so good rods, bearings, floated pins and pistons, proper gaskets, a decent hydro roller and no need to probably turn more than 7200~7500 (if that really). Make your way over there, and look through the threads...read the stickys at the top of the forum, and then quest away!

I can. I have a set of ARP LS-1 head studs w/ 12 pt. nuts. The studs have a spot for an allen socket to fit in the top of them. All you have to do is remove the nut, then put an allen socket in the top of the stud and turn the stud out. The alignment dowels on the corners of the block will keep your heads on untill you lift them off. That is how I put my AFR's on. Just lined up the front bottom holes and the top rear holes and set the head on. Then threaded the studs in with an allen wrench.
