Default So who all has the famous piston slap?

Just wondering how many on the site have piston slap, and how many miles on the engine with those that do.

Well, even though that's kind of a personal question.... I have the stereotypical textbook case of "piston slap"

But.... once warmed up it's gone!

I am about to buy a used motor and the seller says it has piston slap but the motor is fine. What will piston slap do to the motor? Is it bad?

I have it, only when cold. I have heard very few LS1s that DIDN'T have at least some slap.

Mine is only on startup and seems to go away once it warms up. I have 5300 on the clock and it is getting more noticeable on startup....

Late entry. Mine slaps pretty much all the time at idle. Once its good and warm (like 30 minutes of running you can still hear it but its faint. Sounds goes away when you get above 2k rpms, but its still anoying at idle. The car has always done it too.

I "had" pistons slap from the day the car came off the lot (5 miles).........it would be come "less noticeable" when hot but was still there...........I finally chunked off/melted the pistons at 50K miles which pretty much ended "that" problem.....

my forged 388 does not slap new as bad as the stocker did (very little cold/none hot)....

In my opinion, yes. Too much clearance can wear out the cylinder walls and chop up a piston head if severe enough.

Hardcore engine machinists- correct me if I am wrong.
If its a decent price, Id grab it, and check all your clearances, etc. Possibly put in a new set of pistons, after a fresh .010 overbore or hone to get everything to seat snugly.

At least that way you know what you have into the motor, what condition the block will be, and you can rest easy when cranking High R's.
