Question Input Shaft Movement

I took my T56 out today and noticed that you can move the input shaft around (side to side, up and down). Is it normal to have this play?

Mines out right now and I don't have any freeplay at all. Other than that, I don't know.

It is normal . That movement is the result of bearing end play. It should not be excessive but it is normal. It is most desireable to keep this to a minimim. Only a fresh - built box will have no play.

Mine had play also, the guy rebuilding it said he will shim it to tighten it up. But the bearing was OK.

alright, here's a question. I just got my 01 SS about 2 weeks ago and am noticing a rumbling/rattling noise coming from under the car. It kind of sounds like the exhaust is rattling or something. Could this be because our cars have a loose input shaft? do all our cars have this sound? or is it something to worry about?

Probably just input shaft or cluster gear rattle which is totally normal and OK

Thanks, I was hoping thats all it was. Does anyone else agree this is probably the culprit of the noise, or does anyone think it could be something else?

I have something similar but only with the car in neutral and the clutch out.
