Default 3rd gear mph

If I left the tranny in D (3rd) How far will it go mph wise before it wants to shift? 2.73s are in the rear and a 3800 stall.

Hmmm another way to explain this, if I keep it in D (3rd), will the car pull past 140? I've usually kept the car in OD (4th) and taken the car to 130 before I had the converter done.

With my 3.73 gears and SS4000 TC it shifted into OD at 145 mph.

As long as I'm WOT, mine will stay in 3rd. If you back off the gas just enough, it will shift into OD. You will make your top end speed in 3rd anyway, not OD.

I know but for those top speed runs, if I left the shifter in 3rd, just wanted to know how far up the MPH scale it will go before wanting to shift. 145 with 3.73s, that sounds pretty good especially since the fastest I have gone with my old T/A was 140. That's about as fast as I'd go, 1/4 mile or top speed.

Asuming the converter is very efficient, you can theoreticly do 168-170mph in 3rd.

That's true. I still had more to go.....I just never changed my rev limit for 3rd gear. I haven't tried it again since I took care of that. lol But, not sure I want to go any faster than 145 though.

I'm confused. I have always used this calculator to determine where I would redline with certain gears/tires. According to this my 245 50 16 tires and 3.23 gears makes my car shift to OD (hit 6000 redline in third) at 142 mph which I know for a fact is accurate

When I factor in 3.73 gears it tells me that I would redline 3rd at 123 mph with all else being the same. I see you got a good heads/cam package so I assume your redlining higher then 6000 rpm's to turn 145 in third?

Roarin_8 with 2.73 gears, stock tires, stock internals and a 6000 rpm redline you would shift to OD at 168 MPH according to the calculator

Yeah 2.73s are the highway gear. I'm not changing to 3.73s until I do my cam swap, which in turn I'll rev it a bit higher due to changing out the springs and retainers.

I posted this because I've read that it's bad on the 3-4 clutches going WOT into OD on a stock Tranny.

That's the calculator I use too and I found it to be real accurate.

Roarin: Don't consider swaping gears a "must do" with your cam, I would save the money for a 12 bolt down the road. I just installed a 237/242 MS3 with the 2.73s and it's not bad at all, not nearly as bad as people say. No surging no bucking and it's just slightly sluggish out of the hole but, it is still a monster from a roll and running through the gears. It does about 110-115 in 2nd though, first tops out at about 60 mph.
