Default Lightweight valves, Z06 valves, reliability?

Seen some remarks about lightweight valves being
less reliable with high spring rates & big cams than
the "stock" regular LS1 valves.

This was just in some automotive mag, so I'm not
that sure about it. Wondering whether people have
been seeing valvestem failures on the factory Z06
valves (I have a full set of these, want to put them
in my truck heads with Crane duals), or whether this
is more about aftermarket, super light weight ones,
or just a bunch of hot air (text).

I wouldn't think Z06 factory valves would be let out
into the wild if they were that close to the edge. My
plan is only a little 220/220 566/566 baby cam anyway.
But I'd like to know where any such reliability problem
might start to show up, if there is one.

I've been running 03 LS6 valves on my 224/220 .581/.581 116 XE-R with 918's/Tit Ret for about a year and I shoot up to 200 dry nitrous (About 30/40 passes).

No issues whatsoever. I'm a big fan of lighter moving valve train.

I plan on running the lighter LS6 valves when I get a set of stock LS6 heads, which I'll run stock w/my cam(F13...no baby, but not huge). I haven't found anything to make me second guess running them w/the F13. I would think, like Predator said, since they've been released, they've got to be pretty reliable.

Lighter valves are gonna be just fine with bigger cam.

I'm about to run Stock LS1 heads (241 casting) with F10 cam and Patriot Duals sprigs. Not the lightest setup, I know.

However, once I can afford Zo6 heads (and have them ported), I'll keep the lighter Z06 valves, throw in some light Comp 918 springs with Titanium retainers, and Yella-Terra Rockers, and call it a "happy-7K reving-day"

Yt's are too heavy.
Stockers with C-clips and new trunions are better. (Harland Sharp kit)

I'm about to order some of those through NastyPerformance. Has anyone used them yet?

I'm running z06 valves with a .600 lift 230 duration cam. Everything so far has been performing great. I went with titanium retainers and stock rockers. I am running manly duals as well

Only bad thing about LS6 valves is you are stuck with stock sizes (2.00" intake valve) unless the new Z06 engine will have bigger valves?

232/240 595/609 112 with Yella Terra rockers and LS6 valves. I have just over 20,000 miles on the engine. Ran a 6.7 on my last nitrous pass. I can't say anything bad about the Yella Terras or the LS6 valves.

Thumbs up

Jimmyblue,

I have thrashed the hell out of my lightly modded Z06 for 36000 miles and have no issues.(6900rpm fuel shutoff)

I intend to step up to AFR 225s and I will request Comp Cams 918 or 921s depending on cam selection, which are beehive springs. A little known fact is that the stockers on the LS6 are worth 17 HP over dual springs.

As an old engine builder, I think the valvetrain in total is a great setup in the LS6.

I don't doubt you, but why would that be? I am trying my best to learn more.

less weight in the valvetrain. 17hp is a bit overkill, but there's no doubt that a lighter spring will free up more hp. i'd rather run a more aggressive cam, and take advantage of a dual spring setup though.
