HPT need help with VIN issue.... Ok, during some problematic tuning issues with Drew778's car, I had to end up rewriting the entire PCM. When I did, I didnt change the VIN on the file to match his (I pulled a stock tune from the repository with obviously different VIN). So, now he is trying to use Edit but it says wrong VIN. I wrote his old flash back in that had the initial tune and his VIN, but still no luck. I figure since the entire re-write PCM changed the VIN and Edit no longer recognizes it, maybe I need to re-write entire PCM again, but with his VIN #. Is this the fix??

I'm not 100% sure on this...but I think the problem is that edit is locked to the vehicle in question...not by vin... but by vehicle ID....
so the fact that you put in another tune and completely rewrote the OS...changed that vehicle ID...
so put back in his original tune....
what problems were you having anyways....
the fix you need is to use the stock tables...but you neeed to open his....and another at the same time..(click the bins so they each open their own editor...)tab back and forth and copy all of the stock tables over to his...then write it...
that way it keeps his vehicle ID....
or you could go into a hex editor if you knew where to look and manually change the vehicle ID in hex....pain in teh *** to do that though...

Try writing his original tune back into the vehicle using the rewrite entire..
Then, cycle the IGN per the help files instructions in the Change VIN section. After enough cycles with the proper delay reached, the PCM should take the new VIN from the file (which should be his original VIN)...
Then you can try the other software.
Perhaps that will work.

I kept getting checksum errors while reading the VCM on a 98 T/A. After
the read would complete, I would get an error message saying to try reading
the VCM again or send the bin and log files to support. I tried to read it 3
times and got the same error each time. Here are the files. I need help

Hi Glen,
That file is a modified tune from somebody else who did not correct the
checksum properly. As we have no idea what they did to it, you will have
to return the vehicle to a stock with a valid file using re-write entire
VCM. Make sure the battery is fully charged when you do this as there is
always the chance of killing the VCM if the battery is low or dies out.

So I should use a stock file from another 98 A4 car? I have plenty of
stoc 98 files to pick from. Can I just pick one and change the VIN to match
this car and do a full rewrite then?

Hi Glen,
Use one that is the same operating system.
Then just re-write entire VCM. The VIN should not change as we do not
re-write that section for no reason. If the VIN does get corrupted for some reason, you can use the scan tool to change it.

gameover/Ken: Other then changing the VIN, with entire re-write, is there anything else I need to do, check or change? Just would like to know before I attempt this. Thanks

It worked. Thanks guys. I put the initial tune back in, making sure the VIN was correct, Re-write VCM and then cycled the key as per instructions, and viola Edit see's it now. Drew's happy, which means I can be happy now. Besides I learned a lot through this whole escapade.
