Default 2nd gear doesn't like me!

Hello, I'm somewhat new here, but I'm a regular on CZ28.com.

OK, I've got a question. Concerning my trans, when I'm on it I have to take my time w/ 2nd or else it grinds. When I'm driving normally, sometimes I have to pull it down a couple times in order to get it to go into 2nd. I have been told that it could be a cracked syncro, and to listen for ticking in 2nd. I have tried that and I do not hear anything.

Sometimes, I'll put it into 1st to get the syncro to line up and slow down in order to help it go into 2nd..........

Anyone have any idea what's going on here??

Definitely a synchro, and it's not too cheap to get replaced. Same thing was happening to me.

250 to pull trans (unless you do it yourself) 250 flat fee for labor, and then parts. A new synchro assembly is $125. You might as well get the whole thing rebuilt while you're in there to get your money's worth out of the labor.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head... ~$700 to get my 2nd synchro replaced

Yep, agree with the above posts. The synchro teeth are likely rounded off, causing the grinding going into gear. Second gear usually takes some of the worst abuse. Mine was pretty crappy when I tore the tranny down. I have a couple pics of it but they are to big to post up.

Yep, my third gear was only a touch better shape than second. I think if you do more stoplight-stoplight racing 2nd takes the brunt of it. Drag racers running the quarter will probably be hardest on third gear.
