Default Oil Pump recommendations ?

I think it's about time I replaced my stock oil pump in my 98. (Yeah, I know, I should have done it a long time ago). Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a good ported oil pump. Any reviews or tests done to determine the best ones? I figure they can't be much price differences ($130- $150) So I want to get the best one I can. TIA

Just grab any sponsors 'LS6' style pump. The important thing is that it's the newer design.

How will I know if it's the newer design? Is there a part # or a way to tell or do I just have to ask?

It's usually advertised as an LS6 pump, the newer style (LS6) replaced the older (LS1) and assumed it's part number.

How do you blueprint an oil pump?
I am having my stock 2000 oil pump ported and shimmed. Is that considered the newer design? From what I understand, it is only the 98 pumps that are iffy.

I'll agree that a stock LS6 pump is good enough, but the claim they make with the ported units is more about volume than pressure.

yeah that is the big deal about a higher performance pump, you want good pressure so its pumping good which i guess will net more flow since all pumps go through the same restrictions, so i think the pressure is a good way to compair, which shows no diff (unless you might want 1 psi for another 70 bucks) i think that they dont make enough changes to make the volume change too much, if your getting pressure it means there is a restriction, its all gotta go through that hole in the block that doesnt get touched. so IMO i dont think the volume change would be enough to spend 2 times as much

with that said, i could be 110% wrong, its just my opinion. talking with a lot of older car guys with muscle cars kinda chuckled when i said ported ls6 pump and they said what do you need that for?

yeah its the only one different, prob like most of their other stuff, they try to get the newbies to think they are the gods of the car world, put their name on it, make up some fancy **** that sounds like it would help if they changed it and sell it for a million dollars. for starters, i wouldnt even look at the slp site at their "performance" stuff or anything at that. we have pleanty of sponsors here that sell stuff just as good if not better, the only difference is they dont sell you a crock of **** with it

from what i understand, the late model 2000's came with new style pumps in them. my oil pressure was great before, my car was made in march, im getting about the same pressure readings.

From what I understand it's not necessarily that the older pumps have bad pressure, but once in awhile they just take a crap.

Second that SLP stuff is usually over priced ****, however I think that there pump is preshimmed to accomadate a double roller timing chain. Ie doesn't require the extra metal plates from a double roller chain. But the plates work just fine, provided they are actually on the right direction LOL. remember that one there chuck

I do know quite a few guys that do blueprint oil pumps. I can also tell you this I have personaly seen 3 LS1 oil pumps that have failed. One somehow jammed the gears together and even locked up the motor!

How can you find out if you have a new pump in the vehicle? I have a 2000 but don't know if mine came with the newer pump. Is there a specific marking or part # to look for? If there is, how can I spot it?

AFAIK there is no way to know, unless you have a 01+, then you know it's newer.
