ok, from my understanding, you have

housing - the big part that holds the axles and the dif. in

differential - delivers power to the axles

axle's- i know what these are...i've broken afew

gears- same as above

what about the '3rd member'? WTF is it?

The 3rd member holds the diff and gear set. The housing holds the 3rd member and axles and has the suspension mounting oints on it.

THE THIRD MEMBER IS LIKE A SUIT CASE FOR THE DIFF AND GEARS
SO YOU CAN CHANGE THEM WITH OUT HAVEING TO RE SET UP YOU GEARS
ie have two of them one with say 4.56 and spool for track and another with 4.11 and diff or locker
