Default Tranny rebuild... could my friend and I?

My friend is a good mechanic. He's been working on cars professionally for 8 years. He has rebuilt many automatic trannys, but never a manual (which is supposed to be easier). Pretty much all of the work that is done to my car, he has done (I assist.... my tool is the flash light. LOL). I think that he can do it, plus it'll only cost me 2 12pks of Corona. heh.

plus the parts I don't see why he couldn't do it. They are supposedly one of the easier tranny's to work on IIRC.

You should probably check and make sure he has all of the special tools needed. If you look at the t56 service manual online it tells you what tools you will need. Just read through it and maybe show him it also just to get an idea of what you will be dealing with.

If we do it at Gearhead Garage here in Gilbert, AZ, we can rent the tools that they have.

My major concern is inspecting everything when it's apart. I shouldn't need new gears or synchros, but we'll see

If it doesnt need synchros or gears why are you rebuilding it?
Get the manual and you will see the tools needed. The only thing an Auto guy might not have is agear/ bearing puller. I bet it was an auto guy that said the manuals were easier.

I think he meant the actual asssymblies. I thought my trans was extremely messed up in 3rd because it would not let me in half the time and it would pop out. I just needed the synchro assymbly instead of the gear. He will most likely be rebuilding the synchros and putting in a steel 3-4 shift fork, or at least that is what he should be doing, unless something else is wrong.

The manual will tell you how to inspect the parts and what to look for. My advice would be to replace the gears if you determine the corresponding synchro is bad.

the bearings are jacked up. I blew the output shaft bearing and seal, and ended up driving about 20 - 40 miles with almost no tranny fluid. Now the tranny whine is louder than the motor at lower RPMs.

I dont want to be the bearer of bad news but a unit run out of oil is prolly not going to have much worth saving. The "pocket" bearing between the input and output shafts goes first. It semi-welds its self. Blue steel/ metal debris throughout the trans damages anything in mesh(all gears). At least a new input and out put shaft(cannot salvage these even with a new bearing and race).Bluing of steel happaens at a temperature grater that the heat treat tempering. If you see a blued part it must be replaced. The speed gear bearing cages(except 1st) are plastic - they hate heat- look at them carefully. If you see witness of debris run though the gears do not re-use them.

I wouldn't bother with a rebuild then. I'd get a whole new tranny. I think it would be cheaper.
