Well, started tearing the motor apart today
Well guys just like the title says, I started tearing my motor apart today to figure out for sure what my ticking noise was... So far I only found one bent pushrod, so I'm thinking one of my lifters did seize up and cause it to bend. The stupid pushrod gauled out the pushrod guide in my driver's side head pretty good. I have about seven pictures at the link below as some eye candy (I guess that's what you'd call it?). I won't be able to get the heads off until sometime late thursday afternoon since I have to work on wednesday night. I just thought I'd do this as a teardown/possible head cam buildup journal for guys that are thinking about taking the leap but are kind of weary about tearing into their ls1. So far it has been pretty straight forward, once you get the wiring all out of the way, the coilpacks off, and the intake/tb setup off, things don't look quite as complicated. Enjoy the pics below, I'll keep uploading to this link as I go!

I'm gonna replace them with the comp oem style lifters no matter what, I'm thinking the reason the pushrod bent was from it's lifter seizing up, I should know for sure thursday night, I'm probably gonna burn a little midnight oil after work tonight and start working on getting the heads off, just depends on how crappy work is tonight.

Good luck with the project. I am in the middle of a tear down also. Just spent the morning cleaning the head gaskets off and cleaning the head bolt holes. What fun that crap is. Getting ready for a few measurements for valve clearances and will start putting it back together. This is my first time to pull the heads. Like you said, once all the wires and hoses are out of the way, it's not bad at all to work on. I went ahead and installed poly motor mounts while I have the heads off. Couldn't resist since they are right there fully exposed. BTW, the link still isn't working for the pics.

It sounded just like an exhaust leak, so I crawled under the car and double checked everything, Car ran alright, but I could tell that it was losing power so I finally decided to pull it apart. Atleast I know what the source of the sound was now.

As far as the 408 goes, I wish I could right now. But since I can't do that I'll probably go ahead and do a heads/cam swap since something finally gave me a good excuse to.
