for daily driving id say a 224/224 or maybe a 228/228, there are plenty of guys who run bigger cams than that and dont have any problems because its mainly the tune. If you get a good tune then you should have no problems with those two cams. I have heard the 224/224 and the 228/228 and they sound good but dont cause the car to surge nor do they have a rediculous lope that you can hear a mile away. Plus, if emissions is an issue then id stick with the 224/224 because i believe thats the biggest cam that will still pass emissions (not positive, anyone else who knows for sure chime in). In addition, a larger cam is not always better. For instance, a cam such as a 224/224 or a 228/228 will give you a more usable power range (approximately 2500-6200 rpms) but will dyno lower than a bigger cam, such as a 231/237. The problem with a bigger cam like the 231/237 is that the power range kicks in at higher rpms (3500-6800) so if you want to make the most of the cam its going to be necessary to rev your engine up to redline to make the most of the cam. Im not an expert on cams nor do I claim to be but after reading hundreds of posts on cams and helping my buddies install cams on their f-bodys this is what ive learned. Anyone else have any corrections or suggestions feel free to post more but i just listed a basic explanation of cams. Hope my post helped a little and good luck with your decision! BTW im having a 228/228 installed in a few months because my car is my daily driver.

I have a 232/228, its nit my daily but it drives very tame with a little bit of surging in low rpms though i do have a 6 spd. (I think i need bigger gears). I actually wish I would have gotten a bigger cam. As stated earlier its all in the tune.

TR224 is LS1tech.com cam #1. If you can't choose, here's your cam.
Personally I think there is probably a better cam for your situation (depending on what that is) but the TR224 is a good all around performer.
We may be able to be more specific if you give more details about your goals and plans for the car.
Good luck.

Yea like equandt said if you cant decide the Thunder Racing 224 (TR224 on their website) is a very nice cam to start with. It all depends on your power goals, your tolerance to surging at idle, and your desire for more top end power or a smooth powerband. Again most people end up saying that they wish they went with a larger cam than their original choice but if your not sure what exactly your looking for then the again the TR224 is a very nice cam that will make good power throught the powerband. Id say your best bet would be to see if their is an LS1 performance shop in your area (I think Speed Inc is located in Chi-town and they are top notch) and listen to some of their customer's cars or their own shop cars and see what they are using, they will probably even give you a ride and let you feel what a certain cam drives like. I was in the same boat as you, trying to decide on a nice cam that would fit my power goals and still be able to drive it around quite regularly and i decided on a 228/228 for a a good smooth powerband. Im hoping for around 365-375 rwhp. Again Good luck with your decision and whatever cam you choose im sure you will be quite happy with the results!

Go at least low 230's. I daily drive a 237/242 with no problems. People who talk about how the big cams drive around town probably havn't driven one that was properly tuned. Seeing how your car isn't even a daily driver and you want big gaines I REALLY would NOT get a 224. Smallest I'd go is ~F13 size. Maybe something like the TSP 233/239 or torquer 2 (232/234).

with long tubes, volant, ls6 intake and a magnaflow catback i hit 379 rwhp at speed inc.
im figuring with a ported t/b and pullies i should get mid 390s

I have a 230/227 in my daily driver (over year and a half and 16,000 miles now) and it works just fine for me. The power pickup with cam & tune only was an even 50 rwhp. Funny thing is, I'm thinking about going even bigger, maybe the TSP torquer II or FM13 (~232/234ish range).
Like said above, its all in the tune. With a good tune, a big cam is very liveable. If you want completely stock driveability, then don't go bigger than the TR224. If you can deal with minor surging at low rpms, occassional hot start die out, etc., then go bigger. Most of us who have been running cams for a while haven't regretted going with the bigger cam.

I don't regret my MS3 at all. (237/242 .603/.609 113) It has never died, and I expect that it never will. (since it was tuned) It stumbles or surges a little from time to time, but it's TOTALLY and very easily tolerable. The only thing it doesn't really like to do is idle smoothly in gear for the first few minutes after a COLD start.

See my mods and numbers in my sig. I had my work done at Speed Inc., and as said earlier, they do great work. The cam's not a TR224, but the spec's are almost the same. 400 rwhp is doable with a 224 cam, bolt-ons, uncorked exhaust and proper tuning.
