Default ls1 with steel driveshaft?

upon installation of my shift kit i noticed that my driveshaft had what appeared to be rust on it. yeah, my driveshaft has rust on it. i thought all ls1 f-bodies came factory with ALUMINUM driveshafts? mine is a 2000 a4 camaro - factory 273 car. wtf?

Yep, only 2.73 cars got the steel shaft. Thing seems to be pretty strong though.

That's pretty crazy. Your car must have been built on a Friday by the 3rd shift.

I wish I had a steel drive shaft, I would think it would be a good bit stronger.

No, I'm the third owner. But the car was completely stock, not one mod. I first figured that one of the previous owners might have swapped with a friend before they traded the car in, however, I found out from this site that several people have 6 speed cars with steel driveshafts.

the steel DS also has a nice vibration damper....makes for a smooth ride at high speeds...also has more polar inertia making second gear tire chirps easy

Get the right converter in that car and things will change big time. I kinda like mine. Nothing like running mid 10s at the track all day and then knocking down 30mpg on the way home.

Nope, it hasn't spit any parts yet. I did add a gridle, stud kit, moser axles, and some heavy shock proof oil. Probrably spent $400 on it.

My torque converter is a Midwest 3500 stall with a 2.5 str. It could really use a 2.7-2.8 str though.

when you put a stall converter in your car doesn't your car just rev like its in neutral all the way up to your stall speed? ie 3800 stall conv. = goes nowhere until 3800+rpm..... how could you drive on the freeway, overdrive with 2.73s is like 2000 rpm at 80-85

No the car will actually roll at idle on flat ground. When coming out of stop signs and stuff I probrably only have to spin about 2,000-2,500 rpm to get moving at a normal pace. That's another thing STR helps with. A car with a higher str converter will feel "tighter", but if your running street tires that higher str will burn them off at WOT. On the highway at like 70 mph in 4th with the converter locked the car is literally at idle, I think it spins like 1,000-1,200 rpm. But to accelerate with traffic you just have to roll into it and as the rmps go up alittle the car will accelerate smoothly with the converter locked. Or if you roll into it alot the converter will unlock and your rmps will really go up.
