Default Is it ok to start car with no crank pully?

Just wandering if it's ok to start a car with no crank pully installed. I'm having oil pump O ring issues and it sucks putting the pully on and taking it back off. I'd just like to fire it up to check my pressure.

you cant..... you will have ZERO pressure. it will blow it all out the front cover, making a huge mess in a hurry. on your garage floor and your bearings in your motor.

put it on.

Also doesn't the pully hold the crank timing gear in its place?

No they crank is keyed for the gear to slide over, however the pulley does seal up the front of the engine (along with the front seal)

Interesting...

I ran my motor for ~30 seconds, no crank pulley. It seeped some oil out, but it didn't hurt anything. I had ~39 PSI of oil pressure too.

Bearings were fine, I tore the engine apart 3 days later. Wear patterns looked great.

Sounds like it was a bad idea though.

I know the crank gear is keyed. I thought the pully went in far enuff to keep the gear from trying to slide forward stressing or braking the chain.

That gear is in there with a definite interference fit. It doesn't just come off if you tug on it. I wouldn't foresee it coming loose enough to move forward and damage the chain in normal use. The forces just don't move that direction on it.

Ya when I built my new moter I had to pull the crank gear off to put on my double roller, it was definetly on there. It just looks like the pully goes in far enuff so that gear has absolutly no where to go. Just thought of that as being another possible disaster.
