Default Redline Oil

I have a friend who now works for a local speed shop here. He can get me Redline oil for 6$ a quart. I am currently using GC 0W30. I heard Redline is the best. What viscosity would you recomend. I was leaning toward the 5W40 it has a rating of 15.6 at 100 cst. I didn't know if that would be too thick fo the LS1. The 10W40 was like 14.6 and the 5W30 and 10W30 were in the 10's. Any input?

5w40 is not too thick, and redline is one of the best, i use it.

Redline is good, but GC is better, I would stick with that.

It's short form for German Castrol. If you look on the bottle of Castrol Syntec 0w30, some of them say made in Germany. This is an excellent oil!

Thanks Patman! Never heard of it. I might try it someday. I know it has to be a good oil since you're so thorough with your research.

Plus it's the "shizzle"!

Patman, can you elaborate as to how the GC is better than the Redline? I would really like to know. Do you have some real world independant test data or anything? Does the GC come in any other viscosities besides 0w30?

Thanks

GC only comes in 0w30, and my reason for believing it's better is simply due to the number of very good oil analysis reports people have gotten with this oil compared to Redline. As I've mentioned before, Redline is still a very good oil, but it doesn't quite show as low wear as GC seems to. GC is just one of those oils which is perfectly built, it's got an incredibly trick synthetic base oil which is very shear stable, and allows it to have very low friction without needing all kinds of extra antiwear additives in it (such as the fact that it contains no moly)

Have you seen any test done with Royal Purple? If so how did it fare? Was it better than Redline?

I tested out Royal Purple 5w30 in my wife's Honda and was not impressed with the results at all. I got much lower wear once I switched it to GC.

RP's racing oils are excellent but their 5w30 and 10w30 thin out too easily.

It's only sold in Autozone. The bottles look like this:

Just double check that it says made in Germany on the back if you find one of the bottles on the left, since they did make a short run of American made 0w30 with that style of label.
