What rear for a daily driver/sometimes road racer? 8.8" or 12-bolt?
I take my car to open tracks and DE events once in a while, but otherwise it is strictly a daily driver. It sees the 1/4 sometimes, but I doubt it will ever see anything more than street tires or DRs.
My stock rear has about had it. I have 3-channel ABS so I guess the 9" is out. I would like an 8.8" with a Torsen T2R posi but does anyone actually make a reliable setup? I remember the Extreme Chassis fiasco. Is there a reputable vendor that makes 8.8"s? Or should I just run away from that?
Barring that, it looks like 12-bolts are the way to go. Does anyone make a decent road-racing posi for them?
What else will I need with my potential 8.8 or 12-bolt? Adjustable LCAs? Adjustable tq arm? Swaybar adapters? Shorten driveshaft? Different u-joint? I heard Moser rears require the brake backing plates to be pressed on or something, is that true?
I've never used anything but a stock rear, FYI.
Edit: Car is basically stock. 82k miles. M6 tranny w/stock clutch. The car will either stay a daily driver or become a dedicated road course car someday, so ultimate strength for drag racing isn't a real concern. That's kinda why I'd like to throw an 8.8" in with a good road racing posi. I would also like it to hold together and not howl at me too so that's a big concern. I swear, everywhere I look there's horror stories. There doesn't seem to be a foolproof rear to buy.
For some reason when I search for 8.8 I get zero hits. Grrr.
Thanks,
Dope

Strange is a fan favorite on this board in the 12 bolt range. I don't know exactly what abuse it can handle however so if anyone knows that please chime in. Also, can someone tell me if i can put my Wholesale Direct cross-drilled and slotted (bendix) rotors on the strange 12 bolt, or do i need a rotor they make or something? I really don't want to swap rotors again.
please respoind back soon if possible

How about a 10 bolt with a T2R? I think that is what most of the F-body RR guys are running. If you don't need to strenght of the bigger ring and pinion and axles, I would consider staying with the lighter rotational weight of the 10 bolt. Plus you would not have to deal with the higher costs and pains of an aftermarket rear (leaks, whining etc)
