Default 5.5" dia Driving lights behind my grille.. (pics)

I was told by a couple friends that it could not be done.. blahh. I got the idea from a friends vette that has 2 6" lights mounted where the liscense plate should be. Plus I like the look of the old mustang cobras that had the large driving lights mounted in the grille. sooo....

Using Catz SR series lights roughly 5.5" diamater and under 3" thick. I used Gold irridum driving lights picked up on ebay for $45 (reg price is over $150). Ohh and there are 3 beam choices and several bulb and lense color choices. gold iridium bulbs, HID style bulbs, yellow lenses, fog, driving or spot lights.. blah... blah.. I had to make a custom bent bracket for each light and did trim a little of the styrefoam(sp?) and a corner of the bumper cover that was against the light. With the bit of triming there was a 1/4" or so gap around the entire light. Its a tight fit though!

First pic with No grille

Next with the grille in place

Third lights on with the grille

just figured I'd share since I've not seen any camaros with a large diamater fog light setup and I was told it could not be done because there was not enough space for anyhitng other than small lights. I'll get some pics tonight with the lights on.

That's f!@#$% slick!! That's undoubtedly the coolest thing I've seen anybody do with the grille space on a '98-'02 Camaro. Nice job!

yea i have to admit with a billet grille it looks sick! but as long as your getting enough air into your motor, that would be my only concern. (and yes i know most of the airflow is from under the car forced up and over the radiator, but more is better right??? )

Like Superchannelkev said most of the air is coming from underneath the car, but I am still curious whether or not you have noticed any change in throttle response?

Thanks guys!

I've noticed no change in throttle response but I have a FRA mod done to the car so most of the air was getting pulled from there anyhow. If you don't have the FRA you might notice a differrence.

well with or without there would still be air comming in from there but its good there's no change in throttle response cuz it looks too damn good. do you have an acurate temp gauge? I'm curious if your car would be running any warmer due to blocking off more air intake to the radiator (although it's not the main source of air as stated above) just curious.. kinda makes me wish i had a different grille

I don't think the engine temp would change at all. When I first had the idea I checked it out and the air going into the holes in the grille is completely isolated from the radiators in stock configuration. Either way I drove the car in stop and go traffic for about an hour today in 92 deg 85% humidity weather with no problems but I don't have a good acurate temp gauge.

I actually did open up the existing holes more and opened up holes directly behind the fog lights by cutting away some of the styrfoam to help get as much air around the lights as possible. so with the added holes I might not be seeing much if any difference.

Funny thing is....a few days ago I was wondering what the 98+ would look like with fog lights in the grille like that...I figured it would make it look like the 3rd gen and 93-97 camaros...

took pics at night and (lol!) yeah it does look more T/A.

the beam on these lights is gold irridum as they call it.. basically looks yellow but everything out of the main beam is blueish. anyways pics..

In the evening.. head on. I like this pic. in fact I think I'll make it my avatar and replace my old avatar from my (RIP) old camaro.

Headlights and fogs..

Fog lights.. and well fog lights..

Everything at once! Yes I know in most states its illegal to have more than 2 sets of lights on at one time. heck usually I drive with just the headlights on and no fogs anyhow.

I was thinking of doing that. I miss the look of the older Camaro with the fog lights in the grill. That first pic of your grill without the billet insert looks like the front end of a 69 camaro (non RS). It looks awesome!
