Default Race Coming Up Vs. GTP (Any Advice)

Ok, this guy around my town has been talking crap so we decided to race for a little bit of money.

I drive a 93 Z28 Camaro with 89,xxx miles on it. K&N Cold Air Induction, March Underdrive Pullies, HyperTech Chip and 160 Thermo. And a Raptor Muffler with 4inch dual tips. My car is an all option car but I have removed the spare tire and jack to lose some weight. And I only have two speakers because the others are blew up and no sense replacing them until this is over.

He drives a 98-02 Grand Prix GTP, with a Supercharger pully which he claims makes his car run at 12 PSI. But his is all optioned, and has neon lights underneath. He also has a weird exhaust which I think is just a Muffler.

I'm pretty sure I will blow his doors off because my car has always ran very strong and I've been smoking Mustangs and crap latley. But this race is for precious money which if I win will allow me some new Headers and a Y-Pipe.

Basically, who do you think will win? Any tips for prepping and launch etc? I usually launch at idle because the car feels stronger but I do spin for a second and I would like to avoid that.

The race will be on a private, closed, paved road at night so it should be fairly cool. The road will not be prepped.

Anyway, any tips, and wish me luck .

Stock GTPs around here run 15 flat. You'll beat him from a stop, I'd be careful from a roll though, they're stout up top when modded.

I'm assuming you're an A4? Practice launching with power-braking, that's almost always faster, even with some wheelspin as you'll be in your powerband faster.

I think you should take him though, you prob have a low 14/high 13 second car, just don't blow the lauch.

p.s. if you have a buddy with wider tires or drag radials you can bolt up, nows the time to ask for a favor.

Don't assume he won't walk you. Before I bought my '00 WS6, I owned a '97 and a '99 GTP. Both of them were pretty well set up with numerous mods. The M90 Eaton pushes 7.5lbs stock, but a smaller pulley (depending on size) can push upwards of 18-19 lbs. There's also many other mods that can get those cars very quick. I had both of my GTP's in the mid 12's.

Also, just because they're FWD doesn't mean they can't get off the line quick. In most 1/4 mile runs I had against F-Bodies, I beat them off the line. If any of them caught up, it'd be late in the race.

However, if all this guy's done is slap on a smaller pulley (say... a 3.4") with no other supporting mods, you should be able to take him.

Good luck,
Marc

My 98 GTP with just a 3.4 pulley (the one that is supposed to put you at 12 psi, but in reality 10 is more like it). Well with just a pulley and 0 supporting mods, it ran a 14.2 at Gateway international raceway. Pretty surprising what $80 can do for a GTP.

I think your car should have the edge though.

like they said...it all has to do with his setup, if all he has is the pully you should take him, but if he has a exhaust pully tune, it will be close...you are alo a lt1 =( if you were a ls1 you would probly murder him

I had a 99 GTP with 95,000 miles on it. I had 3.25 pully, headers, intake, throttle body, reprogrammed pcm and pretty much straight through exghaust. My best time was 13.85 @99mph. If he is running that much boost with no other mods he is an idiot. Only a moron can't hear all the knock that he is getting. If that is the case you will walk all over him.

You should beat him but just don't blow the launch.

Thanks for the advice guys, and yes I'am an A4. I think it should be close, he has a crapload of stereo equipment, a muffler, and that pully which is the smaller one. He might be running some different springs but I haven't taken a good look at the car yet.

Anyway, when starting from a power break should I launch at about 3200 RPM's or what? That is where the car feels the strongest from a little bit of practice.

Without a stall you won't be able to get anywhere near 3200rpm's without spinning the tires(as in burnout time). Just try a little practice, I don't think you'll be able to hold the tires at any higher than 1000-1400 rpms.

do as many weight reductions as you can, put some octane booster in your gas, not too much gas, practice that powerbrake....see if you can borrow some nittos, find where your tire pressure should be, make sure your traction control is off for sure...

and post what happens

i dont know why you wouldnt want octane booster, just another cheap thing he can do to try and help go a little faster, if i was racing for a good amount ofmoney i would want to do as many things as possible to help me out....

is there a reason not to use it? i never have but would like to know if there is

raising octane doesnt raise horsepower, that stuff in a can is a gimmick, it will give u like .5 points more if that. on the other hand buying race gas when u run nitrous is a good thing.

Modded GTPs are nice sleepers, I used to take out stock/lightly modded LS1's once in a while with mine (3.33" pulley, headers, exhaust, PCM, intake, ported TB, 1.9 rocker arms) at my 1/8th mile track. Sounds like the guy doesn't have much done, but it may be a close race. Pullied GTP's make a ton of torque, however that makes them difficult to launch. If this guy is running 12 psi and doesn't have many mods, he's pry boost stacking so it's not really that impressive. I would race him from a roll if you can, without the big boy mods, fairly stock GTP's tend to fall on their face after 60 mph.

Have fun!
