Default Need help with STI

Hey guys, this guy I know just got a brand new STI. I seen him the other say when i was in my 5.0 and he was lets race sometime but with your Firehawk, so i said ok. Well we set up the race in a week and a half. So what i needed to know was could i beat him on my stock tires or should i go get some DR's. I have the money to get them, but bills are starting to stack up, so i need your guy's opinions. BTW we are both stock.

it will prolly be a real close race he will prolly get you off the line and those sti's are fast little buggers..if it was a normal wrx it would be no contest and you would win...but the sti will give you a good run

Get some slicks and run his ***... DR's on the street won't make too big of a difference but slicks or ET Streets will... Those things are pretty fast from what I have heard but I haven't ran one yet to know for sure...

Then tell him it has to be 1/4 mi + (go 1/2 mi if you can). Those things usually beat us off the line, but I'd bet he's only a 13.8 - 14.0 sec 1/4 mi runner. Good Luck.

Also, if he JUST got it, he hasnt learned how to drive it. They arent the easiest cars to launch...

STi's are easy sub 13.5 runners.

.. with his AWD advantage, he'll instantly put about 2 car lengths on you from a dig.. and while that can get intimidating, just hang on... and you'll even up and pass once speeds get higher

But, either way, get some sticky/meaty rubber and a nice launch would help alot

It really depends on him and his driving. If he doesn't launch above 5.5K he'll bog it and you should beat him pretty easily, just make sure you go at least 1/4mile. Ask him about his launch technique and see if he'll tell you what he launches at. They can be real mean with a 6-7K launch and they can pull 13.2-13.3's all day with the right driver.

Real racing is from a dig, rolls are gay as hell.

Edit: Not counting random BS on the street, if it's planned racing it better be from a dig.

Even from a dig, youll eventually pass him. How well you drive will decide at what speed youll blow by him.

I hope he's stock. I recently had one drive 400 miles to run me that wasn't(not even close). He had to be running 12.1's or better cause even with MT's and 4.10's, I only just got him by a car, car and a half at the top. They can be wicked quick when modded correctly.

I say you should take the win. It is VERY hard to get an STi to run low 13 out of the box. It takes practice launching the thing properly. My first time at the track I could only run 14.4 stock(three runs). The second time my fastest was only 13.7(another three runs). It's not very easy without practice. All said and done, you should get him close to 60mph.

Not unless you launch the hell out of it and drive it like you hate it. With a moderate launch and average driver, they will only run high 13's.

Here's what I just heard from an STI owner about launching:

"It's a myth that you need to drop the clutch at really high rpms to get a good launch. That's not the best way to launch an STI. All that is needed for consistent blitzes off the line is feathering the throttle at 3500-4500K rpm to build a little boost while gently slipping the clutch(Peak torque is at 4K). As soon as the clutch begins to grip you release and punch it. Works every time, but does take some practice.

With this technique you can pull 0-30 in 1.3 secs, 0-60 in 4.5 and hit 100 in 12.1 secs
Motor Trend got a 13 flat at 103.5 by launching a stock STI properly--beating the vaunted EVO MR by .3 secs."
