Default Cammed 5.0 vs bolt on WS6

This happened a couple of weeks ago and I am just now deciding to post it, mostly because it was not much of a race (only up to 65 mph).

Ok, the story:

On my way home from work a little after 10 pm on a 4 lane street at a light I am stopped in lane 1 and a late 80s Mustang 5.0 with mid to large cam is in lane 3. The Mustang has 2 guys and the one on the passenger has to be around 250 lbs (I am 220 lbs and he is a bit bigger). As the light goes yellow he brakes hard while raising rpms so I do the same up to about 1200 rpm (any higher I will spin). The light goes green and we both take off.

We are bumper to bumper until I get to just over 40 mph and the A4 shifts and squacks the tires but puts me 1.5 to 2 cars ahead. I am excited that I am ahead but realize that on the section of road I am on there are always cops hiding in the shadows and the speed is only 45 mph. So with a 2 car lead and afraid to get a ticket (the roads were clear so no wories there) I shut it down at 65 mph.

I was happy for the outcome but I do not know what the Stang had done and it had extra weight with the passenger as a disadvantage. All I know is I would like to know how me and my car would stack up against that Stang and it's driver at the track.

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think.

If it was cammed, it probably had heads too. There's only so much a heads/cam 302 can do. If no heads, a cam alone wouldn't yield much. A max effort 302 wouldn't be too much quicker than a bolt-on ls1. You took away is hole shot advantage too.
Congrats.

Thanks.

I was thinking the added weight of the other guy had something to do with that... Glad to hear it was probably a close match.

There's one that posts up here that puts right at 415 to the ground and weighs, what? 3200 Lbs. It's pretty quick and has a 150 shot for those other times when N/A just ain't enough.

Yeah, 400+ ish is stout, N/A (I'm just getting into this SBF stuff myself, so I'm no expert). My plan is to go with a small psi blower (Powerdyne, yes please flame), and build up the heads and cam accordingly, then go 347 and slap the blower on that. Don't want to push too much psi.

I highly doubt this one had 415. It did have a nice stance so I suspect suspension work for drag and street and I would bet he had DRs.

If he did have it stripped then the added body may have negated any weight advantage.

Sounded nice with the Cam though. I wouldn't mind owning a 90ish 5.0 GT.
