Default NGK Plugs Suck - AC Delco Iridiums Solve all Problems!

I bought my 99 TA with 44K milkes and one mismatched plug wire and one broken wire we repaired. Car was missing terribly when I bought it before we fixed the wire.

I decided a wire plug change could not hurt. Car had stock Densos in there.

Yesterday I was working, so I had the Garage that takes care of all our delivery cars put in NGK TR55s and MSD Wires. I get the car back and it is missing down low from 1500-2200rpms and popping out the exhaust.

I bring it back this morning, car has multiple misfires on all cylinders according to the scanner.

Garage calls the local Pontiac dealer they deal with, they tell the garage the NGKs suck and to put in Delco Iridium 71164s.

So, I get charged for another 2 hous labor, but now the car runs GREAT.

It runs much better than it had before the NGKs and after.

I always hated NGK plugs for my Mustangs, always ran Autolites in them.

Now I have another reason to doubt NGK quality.

For anyone thinking of going NGK TR55s, I would seriously recommend going to the AC Delco Iridiums.

I still hear s ticking on accleration, it is either a slight leak at the header or maybe the Gasket between the AIR tube and Exhaust manifold.

It is not hurting performance any, so I am not going to worry about it right now.

Next Mod - A real WS6 Lower Airbox - Might be worth a few horses???

That is what almost everyone says, but I have read alot of posts of Problems with them also.

I am far from an expert on these cars, but the Iridiums really smoothed the car out and now it SNAPs to attention on any throttle pressure, I think stock plug wires would have been at least as good as the MSDs.

Sorry you've had bad luck with the NGKs, but I've had two sets in my car ( before mods and after ) and have had no problems with them, like my MSD wires to.

5 plug changes this car, all NGK TR55's, no problems. 130K + miles. -->(unrelated, maybe) NGK is the only reliable plug I could run on 2 & 4 stroke bikes back in the '60s, and they have worked good ever since on my vehicles. Maybe the gap got f'd on some plugs? It happens.

i hate the local auto parts store that says "why would you run japanese spark plugs in an american car?!?!" Well due to lack of NGK's in stock I used some autolites and the car ran like complete crap, backfiring, falling on its *** just not fun to drive, swapped in the NGK's and 0 problems, and 0 problems in my friends 95 blown mustang and 0 problems in my wife's jetta. Sorry to hear you had issues but I still use them and they work great for me...

It might make a difference that your also running stock heads and cam. With the higher compression heads, bigger cam, I had major problems with the Denso Iri's and had to go back to the NGK TR55's.

I guess it all depends on what your mods are and what your plans are with your car.

I also love my NGK's. I changed mine along with my wires to MSD when I did my cam. I was going to try the Iridium's too but I just couldn't justify $8-$10 per plug when TR55's work good enough for me. Sorry to hear that though.

I wish they would have worked.

At least I have a STRONG running car now.

Of course the Tranny mount banging underneath the car on hard acceleration is a little bit of a nuisance

I hate to ask this, but...

What tranny mount shoud I get???

Poly mount worked great for me. No vibrations on my car, but some do report they have increased vibration compared to the stock mount.

I also use NGK's in my car and my g/f's and haven't had any problems on either car.

Sounds to me like the plugs werent the problem maybe the installer. I mean all cylinders misfireing . I'm pretty sure the MSD wires don't let you hear the double click on the coilpack or vice versa on the plug? Also they need to be gapped at .55 or so never put them on straight out the box.

Sucks the NGKs didn't work for ya. I'm also wondering if maybe they gapped them wrong?

Im betting it was the installer as well. I know when I put on my MSD's the first time I had to lube them up pretty good with the plug wire crap to get them to click on. They absoletly would not go on without lubing them. I run the NGK tr6 gapped at .35 here and the only problem I had was picking up 3 rwhp from the stockers.

They should come pre-gapped at .055", but check them just to make sure.

yell03, I don't see why a 1LE mount wouldn't work for your car. It's also a good choice, not as stiff as a poly/ES, but stiffer than the stock rubber one.

Stock I had NGK TR55 IX's and they were good and still are in my toolbox. I went to 11.3:1 compression and went with TR6 IX's and no problems here either. Whatever works for ya.
